I am a violinist. I also enjoy running, working out, reading, and hanging with my friends and cat.

My Friend April is pretty awesome

Over the weekend, my friend April finished an Olympic triathlon. That means she swam for 1 mile, biked for 25, and ran for 6 miles, basically. She had been training for months, and was fundraising for a special cause, that I want to tell you about now–

apriltriathlon

In her own words:

My name is April. Many of you  may not know me, but I am the Deputy Director of Strategic Communications for Panzi Foundation USA, and I have been working with the organization for about two years now. I am passionate about the mission of Panzi Hospital and the work being done there – helping the women of Eastern Congo to rebuild their lives and communities. The women that come to Panzi have endured more trauma than many will ever know, but they radiate incredible strength. Far from being victims, they are survivors. I want to help them tell their stories, and you can be a part of that effort.

I am a professional video producer/editor and this summer, I am donating my time and the use of my equipment and traveling to Eastern Congo with Dr. Lee Ann De Reus (Panzi Foundation USA co-founder) to produce a documentary project showcasing Panzi Hospital and the women who have come through its programs. This will be my first trip to Bukavu, and I am very excited to see the impact Panzi has had on the ground over the last 15 years firsthand. We will be talking to women who have been through the hospital and finished their treatment, hospital staff, members of the surrounding community, and others. Panzi Foundation USA believes there are many supporters in the US (and beyond!) who will be interested to see and hear these stories – and we’d like to be able to show you! But we need your help.

As all of the labor is entirely volunteer and all of the equipment already owned and paid for, we need donations ONLY to fund the travel expenses and tape costs. We’ve set up a page on the crowdfunding platform >>>indiegogo.com<<< and are trying to raise $5000 to bring this project to fruition. To sweeten the deal, we’re throwing in some nice perks for people who are able to donate $50, $100, or $250 – including a limited-edition t-shirt we’re having printed only for this campaign, a producer credit on the documentary, and a photo of Congolese women signed by medical director of Panzi Hospital and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Dr. Denis Mukwege.

Just in case we haven’t given you enough reasons to donate – I am putting my body on the line as well. May 18th, I will be swimming almost a mile, biking almost 25 miles, and running just over 6 miles at the Gateway Triathlon (Carlyle Lake, IL) in support of this campaign and PFUSA. I have been training for months, and it has not always been a fun process. Whenever I feel like I want to give up, however, I get inspiration and strength from the women of Congo. Can you help us share their stories with the world?

Please >>>visit our indiegogo page<<<, donate if you can, and share this campaign with your friends, family, and social networks. We cannot do this without your help!

They are nearly halfway to their goal right now, but they need your help!  Honestly, anything I am trying to add right now just sounds stupid, so I’ll just say: if you can, please donate to her cause. I did, and I’m looking forward to my t-shirt 🙂 I love how dedicated April is to what she believes in and I believe that she does and will continue to make the world a better place. And most important to me (being selfish) she is a wonderful friend and has been there for me many times when I needed someone.

Here’s a picture from last year of April and I running a race together. She could totally kick my butt now (not that she couldn’t then either…but still!)

Balancing act

I feel like every time I get my schedule sorted out, something new and important comes up and I have to make room for it. “Can you come 15 minutes later for a lesson?” “Can we rehearse tomorrow instead of today?” “Can I cancel our lunch plans and reschedule them for another life?”

But as a friend I ran into at a concert the other night reminded me, it’s better to be a little too busy than to not have enough to do, at least as a working musician. Gotta pay those bills, right?

Summer is looking strong, however, and is going to full of teaching, making music, making background music, and *hopefully* some more time for fun and social activities than I’ve had. Last weekend was a wonderful reprieve, but I’m back into the feeling of being overwhelmed by what I need to do, and running from activity to activity. I’m prioritizing digesting lunch right now so I have a few moments to blog before I have to go practice.

Practice: another thing. The more concerts I schedule (and there are two quartet concerts and a piano/violin recital this summer so far) the more I really NEED to practice. Ideally I would practice several hours a day, every day…but I don’t have that amount of time to spend on it. At least not while maintaining relationships, keeping up on my house (who am I kidding, I don’t do that) and being active. Oh, and sleeping. I am and (I hope) will always be a firm proponent of getting a good night’s sleep as many nights per week as possible.

My violin is currently in the shop. I’d gone in with the idea of getting two bows rehaired and getting the winding fixed on my best bow, but then the owner started looking at my violin, and everything he mentioned he could fix or mess with were things that I had noticed needed improvement…so that’s another bill. I can’t wait to see how good (hopefully) it sounds when I get it back! I’ve got a loaner right now, and I’m playing on the very cheap bow that came with my electric violin (part of the set!) so I feel a little out of sorts with playing and practicing right now…another reason to take a few minutes to blog, right?

I like the success I’m currently having with keeping busy teaching and playing gigs. A couple months ago I kept saying that I would be less busy after such and such activity, and then that activity would pass and I’d be just as busy. I’m trying to retire that thought process and simply say, this is when I’ve got a day off, or just block off time to not work, and not feel guilty about it. I’ve realized that this summer will likely be my busiest in a long while, and that’s okay, and that I LIKE being busy working, and that I just have to make sure to prioritize my time so that I can do other stuff too, and that with my chosen profession, yes, I will miss other things, and that’s okay.

I had walked by this cake before, but finally got a picture. My feelings toward the SLSO are mixed and complicated, but I was reminded by the same friend I mentioned above, that I am not alone in that, and that one just has to ignore it and keep going. I enjoy attending the concerts. Yes, I was there on Saturday night, since a few people asked if they saw me. You did.

And now I must practice. What, I’m not sure, but the list of music is long and anything is better than nothing! We had a great quartet meeting this morning planning our next year and thinking about programming and I’m just so excited about what we are going to be playing. I’m in a very different place than I imagined a year ago, but it’s a good place right now, and I’m thankful for that.

Friday Fun Day

I hadn’t had a day off in several weeks until yesterday, so I declared yesterday Friday Fun Day and made sure to keep it a day off. This is often easier said than done, as people often want me to reschedule things, but I knew that a day off was more important.

photo 2

Things that I did: a long bike run from home to the River Des Peres Greenway and then along that, then home again; a long walk around and through Forest Park; a delicious Korean dinner at Asian Kitchen; Arianna String Quartet concert with Zuill Bailey; drinks with friends at Tower Pub. Friday Fun Day continued into today with yoga in the morning at Tower Grover Park, and I picked up a few things for dinner at the Farmer’s Market. I know it’s Saturday but still, whatever. I do have a wedding to play soon so the fun can’t continue forever, but tonight I’m going to the Symphony for the season finale. Finally a busy weekend of fun activities rather than a million gigs!

Don’t get me wrong, I love the million gig weekends too, or at least my bank account does, but it’s nice to have time to take advantage of all the cool stuff a city has to offer and have a bit of relaxing time. Sometimes a girl just needs to ignore her to-do list and enjoy the amazing weather. Or put her feet up and watch some Game of Thrones.

photo 1 (1)

This picture isn’t from Friday Fun Day though, it’s earlier in the week. I had walked by Steve’s Hot Dogs several times, but finally went in to try the “Gorilla Mac & Cheese Dog”. It was pretty tasty, though not something I’d want to eat every day.

I should talk more about the Yoga this morning. I’d never been to a real yoga class before, so I didn’t know what to expect. I have attended a few Bikram Yoga classes in the past, but this was completely different—much more relaxed, calmer, AND of course less hot (that will change as the months go by I’m sure.) I’m sure I was doing many of the poses poorly, and did get an adjustment of my “downward facing dog” by one of the teachers, but I enjoyed the class, felt like it was a great way to start the day and get some good stretching done as well. I need to focus more on stretching, particularly as I’ve been upping my physical activity and plan to keep that level up (My current strategy is “eat enough, move more” to reach my fitness goals).

How is your weekend so far?

CDM Mind and Body Event

I wanted to tell you about a couple of things coming up, fitness-wise, that you might be interested in. I get emails from a variety of people wanting me to blog about various things, and mostly they are not stuff I’m interested in talking about, but when it’s local fitness activities, I definitely am! (Also cat related or food related stuff, but nobody emails about that stuff, sadly…)

Anyway, there is a race/event coming up on May 24 that I’ll be doing (this is in addition to the Creve Coeur Heart to Heart on June 7 that I told you about earlier…giveaway winner was Jen W. and you should look at that post again if you don’t remember that race!), and then MAYBE I’ll check out Yoga at the Arch…we’ll see about that as I’m not really a “yogi” but maybe it would be good for me! I’m definitely thinking of doing the yoga at Tower Grove Farmer’s Market soon, possibly this Saturday…

Here’s the information I want to share with you about some events in St Louis…if you aren’t a local reader, you probably just want to leave now 😉

Arch grounds hosts free outdoor yoga sessions Saturdays in the summer

Beginning May 3rd, all yogis are invited to the Gateway Arch grounds every Saturday at 9 am for FREE one-hour outdoor yoga sessions within the sweeping urban oasis of Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and the Gateway Arch grounds. The sessions will be led by experienced yoga instructors from South City YMCA, and will combine posture and breathing techniques; focus on building strength, flexibility and stamina; and make way for deep relaxation of the mind and body.

Hosted by the National Park Service, these workout sessions are free and open to everyone ranging from beginners to advanced yoga enthusiasts, who are looking to escape the confined spaces of an indoor studio and instead desire the welcoming outdoor atmosphere of a national park. The sessions will continue weekly until construction on the Arch grounds begins later in the summer.

“We are extremely excited to host Yoga at the Gateway Arch again this year,” said Ann Honious, Chief, Museum Services and Interpretation, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. “The National Park Service strives to promote health and fitness, and with these yoga sessions Jefferson National Expansion Memorial seeks to encourage regular exercise while combining the Arch grounds and group-friendly workouts.”

More than 100 people convened at each Yoga at the Arch session in 2013.

Although the sessions are free, participants are encouraged to make reservations in advance at http://ticketsforthearch.com. In doing so, they’ll receive free parking at the Gateway Arch Parking Garage.

For more information, visit www.gatewayarch.com or call 877-982-1410.

May already?

Last week was a whirlwind. I was so busy! I had my divorce hearing which was very difficult emotionally and took up time, and then the rest of the week was filled with totally random but fun work activities. I want to fill you in on everything, but it seems overwhelming, so I’ll just do a few pictures with descriptions!

IMG_9313

I was in a video last week with my friend Joe directing. I got to wear this awesome dress with my favorite red shoes. There was a professional make up artist and everything, so I felt like I looked amazing. One problem: it was REALLY cold outside, where the video was being shot!

IMG_9305 IMG_9311 IMG_9310

Lots of action! It took all day for what will be a 4 minute video. Such is show biz, I guess.

IMG_9324

The blanket helped tremendously. Obviously I had to remove it for actual filming. My partner (a singer, who was holding the violin case as a prop) at least had a jacket to wear. But the day was great fun and a nice change!

IMG_9323

I went on a bike ride on Friday and you can see a bird pooped on me. I was sad, but at least I was wearing the helmet, right?!

IMG_9339

One of my weddings was at Pere Marquette Lodge. I was totally surprised to see a cake there, and naturally needed a picture. It is a long drive to get there (over an hour, and slow…) but a beautiful drive along the river. I want to go back soon but with my bike!

IMG_9338

And then band practice. That’s my purple violin on the floor there, and my binder full of music that I’m finally feeling good playing and now need to memorize. If you don’t remember, I’m in a band that plays Trans-Siberian Orchestra music. We have a tour in Nov/Dec (mostly local-ish places) but we also have a weekend of shows this July in Chicago so we are working hard to make everything sound fantastic. It’s been a lot of fun so far and I’m looking forward to becoming a rock star.

So there you have it. Between practicing, teaching, trying to exercise and cook, and all of that stuff…I’ve been feeling pretty tired and run down, but I see a light at the end of tunnel. March through May are often crazy busy months, but the summer is usually much freer.

Okay, friends, I’d better get ready for the rest of my day. I’m so behind on my to-do list due to all the above activities, so I want to try to do a few things on it today…or at least this week. And of course quality time with the fatness…

The Great Yoplait Taste-off!

If you are a regular blog reader, you know I love yogurt (minus those days I may have been on a crazy diet where I couldn’t eat yogurt.) When I was asked to participate in a yogurt taste test, I jumped at the chance!

The Great Yoplait Taste-off!  (pretty please click through for more information and to support me–this is a sponsored post but this sort of thing really helps me out! Of course, all opinions are my own and the campaign gave me the freedom to make my own decision.)

I was asked to have myself and friends compare Yoplait Greek 100 Strawberry Yogurt to Chobani Simply 100 Strawberry Yogurt. I’ve been a fan of both brands for awhile, so I figured this was a win-win for me.

The Yoplait…

The Chobani…

All together in an artsy manner…

I decided the best thing was to put the yogurts in bowls.

photo 1

I just had one friend help me with the taste test, so it was a blind test for him and I covered my eyes and let him feed me. (Yes, yogurt ended up on my chin. No, I didn’t take a picture.)

We did finish off both bowls after I opened my eyes.

photo 4

So…we were supposed to pick our favorite, right?

They were almost too different to decide. Yes, both are 100 calorie Strawberry Greek Yogurt…but…they were totally different. I got his opinion before telling him what was what, but we both basically agreed on the following:

Yoplait: Sweeter, more fruity, more “dessert-like”.

Chobani: More subtle fruit flavor, creamier, more “yogurt” taste.

In my opinion, they were both tasty, and I would buy either again though maybe in different flavors as lemon is my go-to yogurt favorite—he said he’d probably only buy the Chobani as he doesn’t like the sweeter yogurts.  I think if pressed we’d both say we liked Chobani better but honestly, I hate making decisions like that, and both were just different enough that it seemed too tough to decide!

Verdict of the taste-off: Chobani wins, but just barely. (I’m told that 4 out of 5 Americans preferred Yoplait though!)

(Disclosure statement: This taste test was sponsored by Yoplait, but I was given the creative freedom to honestly express my opinions. )

I’ve taken the Yoplait Taste-off, now it’s your turn! Let me know who wins yours!
