I am a violinist. I also enjoy running, working out, reading, and hanging with my friends and cat.

Rock and Roll, baby!

Last time I ran rock and roll…

Tomorrow I SHALL pee like a rockstar!

We were so tired.

Jen and I went to Frazer’s tonight and Mike was our server.  He asked what we were doing before the race tomorrow.  The man is truly insane.

I told him we were running down to the start line.  Then maybe we’d do some squats.

He realized I was teasing him.

I’m listening to the SLSO concert online right now.  They are playing Chopin Piano Concerto and then Elgar Enigma Variations.  Then it’s off to bed for me…tomorrow will come early.

Half number 6.  Bring it on!!  Looking for my friends at Russell and Compton to be cheering me on (including Chris, yay!).

Rock and Roll Expo

This morning Jen and I went to the Rock and Roll Expo.  I originally wanted to go yesterday because I hate crowds, but my work schedule made it impossible.  I would have taken pictures inside but I was just busy trying not to trample over small children…(yes, I genuinely hate crowds…they make me stabby…)

We ran into Maddie on our way out.  She’s running the full tomorrow, good luck to her!

I was disappointed by the lack of free samples.  There were some, but not too many.  I wanted some of that odd creamsicle tasting stuff we tried in Phoenix.  There was a really tasty protein powder that I got a couple samples of, and the snickers marathon bars are always good, though I have a sneaking suspicion they really are just candy bars.

(I know I’m totally spoiled for race expos since my first ever was for Rock and Roll Phoenix.  I’ll have to run that again in a year I think.  But it was my first expo and it was huge!)

And the shirt…what’s with every race this month having white shirts?

Okay, I’m done complaining.

Jen thought the shirts were really ugly, but I kind of like the skyline (maybe it’s my obsession with the skyline)…I just wish it were a different color than white, like a pale blue would have been nice.

Oh well.  I said I was done complaining!  I’m off to make a recording for the Ocarina Trio.  Then a wedding.  Then dinner with Jen…tomorrow I will be a rock star.

Hahahahaha.

On a sad note, my great aunt Wilma passed away three days ago.  She was 101, according to the paper.  She was my maternal grandmother’s sister.

Here’s a link to her obituary.  She lived along the drive between my two sets of grandparents, in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and when we were younger we would drive from one to the other over the holidays, and stop at Aunt Wilma’s for lunch.  She was always ecstatic to see us and would give us tons of cookies and other sweets people had given her for Christmas. Later, when I played with the Youngstown Symphony while I was in college, she came to one of my concerts.  I remember it was hard for her to get around then.  It’s amazing to think of how much she lived through.

May we all have long full lives!

Do you think I’m funny?

My sister Leslie is very funny.  Well, at least I think so.  And when we get together, the humor increases exponentially.

Well, most people think so.  Not Chris though.  We were just talking about this the other day.  When Leslie was coming to visit in August, Chris said, "well, I don’t think Leslie is very funny."  I tol him that most people think she is very funny, almost as funny as I am.

He said he didn’t think I was that funny either.

Evidently I think HE is funny.

He did admit this week that he just doesn’t want us to get big heads.  Better to say we aren’t funny that get overconfident.

Chris has told me that I am not as funny as I think I am.  That might be true, because I think I am very funny!  Maybe I’m not THAT funny.

Honestly sometimes the pressure is too much.  If people don’t laugh, I often dig in deeper, and this can result in a disaster…I will find something for people to laugh at, and occasionally I go too far.  Oops.  Listen people, just laugh, okay?  It’s not that hard.  Trust me, it’s easier that way.

(Pictures from our most excellent wedding photographer Sarah Crowder!  I bought the digital proofs finally, and have lots of projects planned, but being able to use them all on the blog is part of it.)

Do you think you are funny?  Is that important to you in a partner or a friend?

Thursday already?

How is it already Thursday?  I considered making this a Catuesday post, but then I realized it was Wednesday, which makes it Whine Wednesday.  Except that’s it’s Thursday.

Oops.

Guess the week is flying by!  Soon it will be ROCK AND ROLL time.

Yesterday’s run:  cold and wet.  This is why I belong to a gym.  But no, I had to be all "hard core".  Fail.

Today’s workout:  AWESOME.  I don’t know what we did.  All kinds of stuff.  Pull ups, lunges with stuff overhead, sprints, burpees, and we also argued over whether the mats in the gym are orange (me) or red (Mike).  I believe I was correct.

Got home to this on the doorknob:

The race goes quite near my house, so they must have gone door to door and given everybody one!  Very considerate.  One thing that just occurred to me was that Jen and I probably need to leave the area by 6:30 am (road closure time) in order to GET to the race without having to drive completely out of our way.  We should be able to manage that…

Since when did leaving the house at 6:15 to run start sounding like a good idea?

Here’s hoping!  If it stays cool, it’s just a mental game for me.  Of course…that’s where I break down.

(If you’re asking yourself, what is the point of this post, you are doing the same thing I am.)

(The point is I am setting my goals for Sunday’s race.  2:30)

(and I am excited!)

(also my wedding dress came in, I need to make an appointment at the store but I want to bring a friend and scheduling is hard.)

Go! St Louis Halloween 10k Race Recap

Sunday I ran in the Go! St Louis Halloween 10k.   When I signed up, I thought I would be running with a friend or two, but people were too focused on next week’s race.  Oh well, I don’t mind running alone, it’s character building!

I love the gloves!  And another long sleeve technical fabric shirt.

I got there pretty early because I always worry about parking downtown.  It was easy so I had plenty of time for people watching.  Honestly I didn’t see any really cool costumes—I saw better ones for the 80’s race.  It might have been that the people with awesome costumes just weren’t nearby.  Alternately, it is harder to run a 10k than a 5k.  (10k is 6.2 miles, 5k is 3.1 miles.)

The starting line.  Madness, of course.  I considered starting in the very front but decided it would be a better idea to go further back.

A self-portrait!

There were lots of people!  I should also tell you I went to the symphony concert the night before and then out with friends, so I was functioning on about 5 hours of sleep.  When my alarm went off, I seriously debated not going.  I’m glad I did!

The race was great.  It went through Soulard and then back.  It was hilly but nothing I couldn’t handle.  (It seems everywhere in St Louis is hilly.)  There were a couple rough spots in the race.  First, my shoes came untied…twice!  I was really annoyed by that.  Second, my socks (not running socks, but Halloween socks) started rubbing the bottom of my foot to the extent that I was in some serious pain for mile 4 and 5.  I had to forge ahead, but maybe next time I will reconsider fun socks for a 10k.  The last big challenge was when I was running on part of the course from the April half marathon, and I remember how AWFUL I felt that day and I started to panic just a little bit.  Oops.  But I pushed through and finished strong!  This was only my second 10k ever, and it was a PR.  Let’s hope I can continue my PR streak into next weekend (2:30 or bust)!!

Enjoy some photos!  (Just don’t feel like writing anymore…overall, fun race, good times, would do it again next year.)
