Home sweet home

I’ve got a lot of pictures to go through from my camera.  Here are a few from my phone.

Oh, and I have notified the winner of my Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil giveaway in case you were wondering.  Sorry if you didn’t win.  I’ve got more stuff to giveaway though, so stay tuned!

And I’m heading back to the gym today.  A week or longer of "celebratory eating and drinking" certainly makes one feel flabby.  I’m referring to myself of course.

What did I miss while I was gone?

Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil Review and Giveaway–Closed!!

Recently Tropical Traditions provided me with a jar of coconut oil to review and then have a giveaway for my readers.  I’ve heard that coconut oil is a wonderful healthy alternative to other oils but I really didn’t know much about it.  I did some (internet) research and learned that people used to think it was less healthy (was used and perhaps still is used in movie popcorn because it stays fresher longer but was considered incredibly unhealthy…much like eggs were, right?)—now it seems that coconut oil is possibly considered more healthy than olive oil.  I’m not saying that for certain though, because I’m not a doctor or scientist, and you know how this stuff is.

I really love the smell and taste of coconut.  When I opened the jar I could strongly smell coconut.  Would this affect the taste of food if I used it instead of olive oil?  It turns out the answer is:  not really.

Things to know about coconut oil:  it is in solid form, so to use it for cooking you just need to heat it up, either on the stove or in the microwave.  This is an extra step that is a little annoying, but not really a big deal.  While you are waiting for your oil to melt you can take some and rub it onto your knuckles and elbows to help with dry skin!

I made a few things on the stovetop with coconut oil and then I also made a recipe for “Cumin Coconut Carrots” from a local blog friend. (I recommend this recipe—Chris liked the carrots a lot and said we should make them again—I consider that a winner!)

I haven’t tried this yet, but I hear that if you take some coconut oil and whip it up in your Kitchenaid mixer (or any mixer, really, I just happen to love my Kitchenaid more than I should love a brand) it makes a fantastic body butter.

Anyway, compared to another kind of coconut oil I’ve tried, this one smells SO MUCH better!  That’s really all I can tell you, because I’m not an expert, but I think it seems like a really good product, and I recommend you try it.

Here’s a bunch of information from the company:

Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil - 32 oz.Win 1 quart of Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil!

Tropical Traditions is America’s source for coconut oil. Their Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil is hand crafted in small batches by family producers, and it is the highest quality coconut oil they offer. You can read more about how virgin coconut oil is different from other coconut oils on their website: What is Virgin Coconut Oil?

You can also watch the video they produced about Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil:

Tropical Traditions also carries other varieties of affordable high quality coconut oil. Visit their website to check on current sales, to learn about the many uses of coconut oil, and to read about all the advantages of buying coconut oil online. Since the FDA does not want us to discuss the health benefits of coconut oil on a page where it is being sold or given away, here is the best website to read about the health benefits of coconut oil.

Okay!  You can enter to win your own jar of coconut oil.  This is a little more complicated than some of my previous giveaways, but I think you can manage!  The contest will end at 10:00 pm CDT on Wednesday, October 17.  It is open to US and Canadian residents only.

Country Bob’s Sauce Review and Giveaway–CLOSED

Winners:  Rose, comment #2 by Random Number Generator (which was funny because I liked her comment best, but decided I should pick somebody else then…) so I picked Anna who would use it with venison to make jerky, since I’ve been on a jerky kick lately.  Anna, you should send me the jerky ;)  Thanks to all for entering and congratulations to the winners!

Recently I was sent two bottles of Country Bob’s All-Purpose Sauce to try out and review for my blog.  (You can see lonely bottle two hiding in the background there.)

IMG_1017

Now, contrary to popular belief, I am actually an inherently lazy person.  So my first thought was naturally, let’s take this sauce and use it with some chicken in the crockpot.  So I took a couple of chicken breasts, dumped a bottle of sauce on it, and let it cook slowly all day. (This is my go-to crockpot recipe.  I’ve used different kinds of BBQ sauce, this sauce, salsa, various condensed soups.  You can also add vegetables to it, like carrots which cook really nicely in the crockpot.)

IMG_1019

When you do this, if you really want the chicken to be flavorful, you have to take two forks and really shred the chicken up into small bits, and then let it cook some more.

IMG_1047

SO good!  The sauce had a really good flavor, not too spicy, but not too sweet either. Chris and I have been brainstorming a couple ways to use the other bottle, and what I think we’ll do is use it for chicken wings, but we just haven’t had a chance with all of his travels.  The website also has a bunch of recipe ideas.  Now, it’s a processed sauce, so it’s got sugar and all that, but let’s be honest with ourselves.  Sometimes convenience and taste win out, and this sauce definitely tastes good.  When you get home from work at 10 pm and want dinner, a crockpot meal is genius.

I received the bottles for free to try out, but I would buy them again, or maybe try one of the other sauces they have.

If you want to win two bottles to try out for yourself—two ways to win, leave a separate comment for the second part if you do it: (GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED)

1. Just leave a comment below and tell me how YOU would use the sauce if you win.

2. Follow Country Bob’s on Facebook or Twitter (or both).

I get to have two winners for this contest, so I’ll choose one using a random number generator and the other based on the most interesting comment, in my own opinion, so have fun with it!

This contest/giveaway runs only until Wednesday, September 5 at 10 pm CST. US Residents only. NOW CLOSED, thanks for entering!  Winners announced tomorrow morning.

Mia Mariu Product Review and Giveaway (closed)

Winner has been notified—congrats to Carol Sue!

I never wore much makeup when I was younger.  I still don’t really, but I do wear more than I used to.  Chris always says he prefers me without makeup, but the older I’ve gotten I like to wear more because it makes me feel better and I feel like I look more professional as well.  Generally I wear a bit of foundation, powder, eyeliner, and mascara.  If I’m really getting fancy I’ll add eyeshadow, blush, and something on my lips.

Tantillo101

(Me, fancy.  Hey, I’m still a newlywed, I can post wedding pictures for at least the rest of this year, right?)

When Mia Mariu asked if I would review a couple of their products, I said sure.  They sent a few things, including an anti-aging serum and a lip gloss.  Now, I can’t properly review the anti-aging serum after using it for just a week or so, because I don’t know how well (or poorly) it is keeping me from aging, but I’ll say that it is a very nice texture, feels great going on, and has a nice neutral smell.  It seems to moisturize well, and I don’t feel that I’ve gotten too much more visibly older yet.  So far I like it, and I’ll keep using it (at least until the bottle runs out!)

IMG_1539

The lip gloss is in lipstick form, which I am absolutely terrible at applying.  I know as a “27 year old” woman (that was something we decided on at my party last night, I am not actually 27) I should be able to apply lipstick, but I can’t.  The color looks bright red, but is actually really subtle.

Anyway, I should tell you, yes, I got these products for free to review, but I do like them, especially the “Anti-Aging Brightening Serum.”  I also liked the little sample packs.

CONTEST NOW CLOSED!  WINNER ANNOUNCED TOMORROW.

Now it’s your chance!  You can win one Anti-Aging Brightening Serum and one Hydrating Stick Gloss (your choice of color).  Retail Value of $52.  US Residents only please.

Cupcakes and Whoopie Pies, Oh My!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Now for something completely different than this morning’s post.

And…this probably isn’t a diet friendly blog post.  Just a warning!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

About a week ago I got an email from the Cupcake and Whoopie Cravings Bake Shoppe that a box of goodies had been shipped to me. I was thrilled! I was told I was getting some cupcakes and some whoopie pies.  Angela (the owner) also sent some pictures of what the goodies should look like, in case the icing didn’t quite survive the travel from Philadelphia.

I waited with bated breath for the arrival.  Finally the FedEx man showed up!

Sadly the cupcakes didn’t look quite as pictured.  I had promised I wouldn’t hold that against them—I didn’t expect the cupcakes to travel well.  The whoopie pies traveled great though.

morecupcakes whoopiepies

I knew that my opinion alone wouldn’t really matter, so I enlisted the help of Chris and some other friends to try them out.  I tried a whoopie pie, one of the peanut butter banana cupcakes and part of a lemon cupcake.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What they looked like fresh!  A little more appealing…but good either way.

cupcake whoopiepie

Anyway, what did we think, you’re asking.  Overall, these are DELICIOUS!! I loved the size of the cupcakes—perfect for one.  Sometimes bakeries make those gigantic cupcakes with tons of icing and junk, and I prefer this sort of cupcake—smaller, with a nice amount of icing but not over the top.  The lemon flavor wasn’t cloyingly sweet as is often the case, and the peanut butter banana was a great combination of flavors.  All of the cakes were really moist too.

(I’d say the size is perfect for those who want dessert but not too much.  Maybe they are diet friendly after all!)

As far as the whoopie pies, I’m not a huge fan of red velvet generally, but it was a great representation of that flavor.  If you like red velvet, you’ll LOVE them I’m sure! My favorite part was the cream cheese icing, and is always my favorite part of red velvet cake, if I’m “forced” to eat it.  Melissa, a native New Englander, said that whoopie pies are a Maine thing, and are usually chocolate, but she thought these were delicious.  Jen said the same, but wished they had more icing, and didn’t like the cream cheese icing as well as regular icing.  But everybody agreed the treats were great, it’s really just a matter of what flavors you prefer best!  I see the company has seasonal flavors as well.

If you live in the United States, the company will ship whoopie pies to you, and if you live in Philadelphia (I know some of you do!), Delaware or New Jersey you can also have cupcakes shipped to you.

Okay, it’s giveaway time!  The company is giving two travel coffee tumblers to a lucky reader!  U.S. Shipping Addresses only, I apologize to any international readers.

GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

How cute are these??  I wish I could win them!

Seriously, aren’t they cute?  No guarantees they won’t make you crave cupcakes and whoopie pies constantly 😉

Oh, and may I say, one of the best things I have ever done in my life is join AAA and then put the membership on auto-renew.  My car wouldn’t start tonight after work and they came within an hour to help.  I probably call them about once a year, sometimes for me, sometimes for a friend (who honestly should get their own membership, but hey, at least I’m a good friend!), and that membership fee is money well spent!  I guess the wires going into the battery had corroded a bit, or, that is, the connections on the wires, and that was why it wouldn’t start.  The AAA guy cleaned it off and tightened some stuff and it started right up.  I was so relieved!

Oh, and I took this picture in the waiting room at my school, while waiting for the truck.  It’s shark week, I believe?
