A different sort of bling

Up until early Saturday morning, I was planning to run the Frosty Five Race I had signed up for…and then I realized it was okay to not show up for a race on the morning after I got engaged.  Rather than race bling—I would be shopping for another sort of “bling” in the afternoon and I didn’t want to be ridiculously tired and not appreciate it.  There are more important things that running.  And working out.  Or at least that’s what I’m telling myself today…

Besides I already got the t-shirt, that’s all you need, right?  And I am going to wear the t-shirt proudly because that’s the race I didn’t run on the day after I got engaged.  It’s a nice shirt.

(the race number that wasn’t—ironically Chris’s birthday, which should have been a clue…)

But let’s back up to Friday afternoon.

Or should I back up to 12 years ago, when Chris and I started dating, in college?

No, we’ll do Friday afternoon.

We had reservations to go out for Valentine’s Day dinner at Franco on Saturday night, so I was planning to cook Friday night.  I got back from the grocery store and was talking to Chris about what to make for dinner, and he said he would prefer to go out for dinner.  So we discussed where to go (I thought somewhere cheap, since we already had fancy plans for Saturday) and what time to go, and he was being really wishy washy about it, which honestly isn’t that unusual, but I was getting annoyed and he was also getting annoyed.  I had to shower, and then was getting stuff together for the morning’s race, doing some random house stuff and Chris said, why don’t you just sit down and relax?

I FINALLY went to sit down and he says, “I thought we’d just go to Franco tonight instead.”

I said, “did you make a reservation?”  Because I had been telling him how this was a very busy weekend for people to go out and you probably couldn’t just show up somewhere.  He said, “Yes, I did,” and pulls out a dozen red roses, and a jewelry box.

I was shocked.

The jewelry box LOOKED like a ring, but I wasn’t going to assume…I thought to myself, if that’s earrings…I will kill him.

Then he opened it.

It wasn’t a ring, per se, but it was a diamond in a ring shaped object.  (He bought the diamond first and thought we’d pick out the ring together.)

I think I blacked out.  I know I burst into tears.

He didn’t say anything for a long time…and then he got down on one knee and (of course) he asked me to marry him…I think I didn’t answer for awhile because I thought the answer was assumed…but then I said YES.

Chris told me he called my dad earlier that day to ask for my “hand” in marriage.  (Which I thought was very funny, because I kept thinking of the scene from Alias where Danny calls Sydney’s dad…)

Evidently he asked my dad, and my dad said (after a long pause), “Can I have a few days to think it over?”

(He has a dry sense of humor.)

Chris told him “I would rather not.”

So then we both had phone calls to make and text messages to send.  And then we went to dinner.

We were seated at a table in the window where you can sit side by side on a window seat and look at the whole restaurant.  It was really neat.  We had a bottle of wine and a cheese plate to start.  Then I had the Caesar Salad with Anchovies and “Braised Veal Sweetbreads, Black Trumpet Mushroom and Pearl Onion Ragout, Foie Gras Twice Baked Red Potato” from the Valentine’s Special menu.  Wow!  Everything was fantastic.  Chris and I split Chocolate Bread Pudding with Huckleberry Sauce for dessert.  After dinner a few of our friends met us for a short celebration and to congratulate us.

Saturday we went ring shopping.  Here’s what we picked out (my hand looks freakishly large in comparison to my arm, sorry!  Plus I promise I don’t have a weird arm rash happening, that’s just the picture.) Oh, and we ended up buying the ring at the Diamond Shop in Clayton.  They were very easy to work with.

(It’s on my right hand because for violinists it’s tough to play with a ring on our left hand…I can wear it on either hand, but figured I’d mostly use my right hand.)

Did you win?

Today one of my students noticed a picture I have on the mantel of myself running in a race (the Lewis and Clark).  He asked, “Oh, did you run in a race?”

I said, yes, I ran in a half-marathon in the fall.

He thought about that for a bit, and then asked “Did you win?”

When I told him, no, I didn’t…he looked disappointed.

He asked what place I finished.  I told him I didn’t remember, that there were over 5000 people, that I was somewhere in the middle, maybe close to 3000th (I don’t remember!).  I think I blew his mind.

But I loved it:  “Did you win?”  No one else has asked me that!

This is why I teach.

Gotta love the all caps from the National Weather Service.  Basically we are all in BIG TROUBLE.

Today:  Spinning class (mainly hills…not sure if the teacher really plans these classes out or simply likes to ride the bike while standing) and a 7 mile run.  I did the run a little faster than some of my long runs in the past (4.8-5.0 mph rather than 4.7) and felt fine.  The bottom of my feet were killing me around mile 3 so I tried to really focus on how my feet were landing.  I need to pay a visit to the shoe store, even though I wore my newer shoes today.

Tomorrow:  Lots of teaching?  Or a snow day?  (I do NOT want to drive to St. Peters and then have it start icing…I’m totally stressed about that.)

Last night I had a great time hanging out with my friend Sarah.  We had dinner and drinks, and chitchatted about life, whatever, teaching violin, etc.  It was a nice end to a day that was a bit trying at times (had an awful and awkward gig that I won’t go into on the blog.)

I also played a wedding at the New Town Chapel.  I had not been there before, and was NOT prepared for the “Truman Show”-like atmosphere that is New Town (St. Charles).  I don’t want to be too negative about it, but I was really not prepared!  Seriously, there is a creepy 1950’s style looking town in the middle of nowhere…for no apparent reason.  Maybe I have a negative attitude towards homogeneity (I am a city dweller and I love diversity) and shouldn’t assume the worst.  The chapel was pretty enough, though oddly the doors in the balcony kept blowing open and we really struggled to keep them shut, as it was cold outside.  Oddly none of the guests sitting nearby seemed to care about the doors.  I have my opinions on why that is as well—not a single person offered to help me or my colleague shut the doors even though we were trying to PLAY for the wedding while this was happning.  I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t have been happy if the doors stayed open…

(and this wasn’t the awkward awful gig I was referring to!)

Some pictures—I felt the retro camera app was VERY appropriate.

Why yes, I’m in a crabby mood tonight!  Thanks for asking!  We bloggers can’t always be roses and songbirds, you know Winking smile

P.F. Chang’s Rock n Roll Marathon and Half Marathon 1/16/11

As promised, my detailed race recap!

I decided way back in October to run the P. F. Chang’s Rock n Roll Half Marathon.  My sister Leslie was running the marathon (she ran the half last year), and my friend Sarah was running the half marathon.  I thought it would be a nice challenge plus a good opportunity to go visit them both.

I got to Phoenix on Friday, and Leslie and I went straight to the expo.  I hadn’t run a race with an expo before, so I was very excited!  We picked up our race numbers, our shirts, and our bags of ads and stuff.  We then walked around and picked up loads of free samples from a variety of booths.  We also looked at some of the shops, but I didn’t buy anything—I figured anything I wanted I could likely find for cheaper online.

Saturday was for resting, and then Sunday morning was the race.  The marathon start time was 7:40 am, and the half start time was 8:30, but there was a wave start and I was in corral 21.  I got a lift to the start with Leslie, so I hung around with her beforehand and kept her company until her race began.  It was completely dark when we got there, and the sun came up shortly before the race started.  There were loads of people milling about, and there were 9 corrals for the marathon (I think).  Leslie was in corral 6.

At Leslie’s apartment, then at the race, waiting to start.

At corral 6!

It was a bit cool outside, but not too bad—I was pretty comfortable with my jacket and vest.  Leslie was wearing a paper jacket she bought at the expo.  It was funny looking but she said it was warm and she didn’t want to wear anything around her waist.

The marathoners left on time, and it only took them a few minutes to all get going. Leslie was shocked how quickly it was time to run.  I wished her good luck as she ran away.

I then went in search of my friend Sarah.  I also made a gear check stop and a porta-potty stop.  Just for the record, I seriously hate porta-potties.  They were super gross at this race, probably because there were about 40,000 runners using them…you could apparently pay extra to use fancy bathrooms, but I didn’t do that.

167028_10150122982391550_697061549_8249340_1942936_n

I finally found Sarah and her boyfriend Sam who was there for moral support.  She was supposed to be in corral 23 and I was supposed to be in corral 21.  They didn’t seem super strict, so we split the difference and got into corral 22.  I’m glad we did, because it took about 40 minutes to cross the starting line AFTER the official race started and it was really nice to have somebody to chat with.

Sarah and I posing in front of…the porta potties.  Seriously we didn’t notice that until later.

The race started at 8:30 after a moment of silence for the victims of the Tucson shooting and the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner.  Sam went up to the starting line to try to get some pictures, and we just waited…and waited…and waited…

They used a “wave start”, which meant that the first corral left, then they waited just a bit, then the next corral, then a short wait, etc, so that the field would be moving along decently after the start.  We slowly walked towards the start line, and FINALLY it was our turn to start running!  Sam got a few great pictures at the start.

runningDSCN1401_595

I ran the first mile or so with Sarah, but her pace was just a bit slower than I was comfortable with so I left her behind.  The first couple miles went along pretty easily, but from about mile 4 to 9 I kept having cramps/side stitches.  I managed to keep running for the most part, but I was really frustrated by that.  I don’t know if I ate too much for breakfast or what—maybe having a little of the sports drink they were giving out at the race was a bad idea.  In any case, I pushed through, but I put on my headphones.  I like running alone and wasn’t planning to use my ipod, but I really needed something to distract myself from my discomfort.  I like to listen to podcasts while I run, so I listened to two or three episodes of Car Talk.

Throughout the race there were tons of people running with me.  Basically the route was from Phoenix to Tempe, and the whole time I was surrounded by people, and at times it was really congested.  I got frustrated sometimes that people would be walking in lines right in front of me and I would have to work to go around them.  Other times I was walking and was likely frustrating other people!  It was exciting to be around so many people though, and there was definitely some great people watching!

Along the route there were bands playing, and often small groups of people cheering.  Sometimes there were large groups, and of course a large number of water stops.  The water stops were always a MESS with cups all over and the roads seemed sticky, probably from the sports drink (cytomax, I believe.)  Around mile 10 my feet started to really hurt, and I just wanted to stop.  I realized, however, that walking didn’t help my feet feel any better…so I kept running.  I told myself if I kept running, I would get done sooner, and the sooner I got done, the sooner I would be able to take my shoes off and sit down.  So I kept going.  And going.

I see I clench my fists when I run…I need to work on that!

I had thought perhaps I would be able to finish close to 2:30 but I knew early on that wasn’t an option.  I decided to try to finish under 2:45.  It was a challenge!  I really had to run hard the last few miles, and I really had to push myself.

I crossed the finish line!  You can see the great sense of relief!

You can watch me finish using this link:

Action Sports International.

Not quite under 2:45, but I’ll take it!  I wore my garmin for the race, but I haven’t yet uploaded the splits.  I actually am not sure how to get it to do the mile by mile breakdown—can somebody help me with that?

I ran MOST of the race with just occasional walk breaks and one short potty break, which was really my goal.  After crossing the finish line I got water and my medal and then they took finish line photos.

image

I was very happy!   I love this picture, by the way.

There was an area for only finishers with food and drinks—I picked up a bottle of cytomax, some fruit and some energy bars.  Then I went to get my gear check bag to put on my flip flops and find my friends.  I got my bag and turned on my phone, and then I saw Leslie getting her bag—she finished in around 4:15.

I was happy, she was sad because she was so tired.

We didn’t wait around for Sarah because her boyfriend’s sister was running the full and we didn’t want to wait any longer and just get back.  However, they all finished too and had a great time!

DSCI0010

Overall the race was as advertised:  flat, fast, and fun.  It was a pretty boring course through the city, but the crowd support was great.  The amenities were fantastic, the gear check was quick and easy, the medals very substantial feeling, and the t shirt is a nice technical shirt—I just wish they had women’s fits instead of men’s.  Would I run this race again?  Maybe!  Definitely if I lived closer, maybe for traveling.  Or maybe I’ll do the marathon someday… I definitely recommend the race to others.

Finished in 2:46:07

I was too tired to blog yesterday…and I will do a longer, more detailed race recap later, but…we all finished!

image

I didn’t go as fast as I’d hoped, but I improved my time, ran considerably more of the race than my previous one, and had a great time!

My sister Leslie finished the marathon(her first!) in 4:15:50.  I don’t know my friend Sarah’s time but it was a little after me (her first half!).  Everybody was proud and happy.

Phoenix Rocks

I’m in Phoenix now, on the eve of my second half marathon.  I’m meeting a friend shortly so I will just give you all a brief recap.

My flight yesterday was great.  The funny thing was that some women were talking in the waiting area to board the plane, and it turns out that of about five people in one area, three of us were flying to Phoenix to run the race.  I guess I’m not the only crazy one!  I arrived in the mid-afternoon and my sister Leslie picked me up at the airport.  We went directly to the expo for the race (where you pick up your race number.)

I haven’t run a race with an expo before so this was a new experience to me.  We picked up our numbers, t-shirts, and goody bags, then we walked around.  There were tons of booths for a variety of products related to running—clothes, shoes, drinks, snacks, lotions, even paper jackets to buy for “throwaway” clothing.  We picked up some free samples (though the Lara bar table was being very stingy) and were probably there about an hour.

Dinner was at Cibo in Phoenix, and then I went to the Phoenix Symphony concert (my sister is a violinist in the symphony).  The concert was in Tempe at the Tempe Center for the Arts, a relatively new place, I am told.  The symphony played all six of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos.  I ran into my friend Karen, (also a violinist in the symphony, but not playing that night) and we sat together.  (Karen is a good friend of mine from when we lived in Cleveland).  It was cool to see Leslie perform along with a few other friends in the symphony!

Today I spent an hour wandering around “Old Town Scottsdale” while Leslie was in a rehearsal.  I bought a souvenir mug and got a really nice leather bag!  We had lunch at the Orange Table and then relaxed in the afternoon—wanted to rest our legs, especially as Leslie is running the full marathon tomorrow.  Dinner was homemade pasta and salmon…and now it’s time to meet up with my friend Sarah for a short while and then early to bed, early to rise, tomorrow it will be time to run!

I promise I’ll have pictures soon—I just haven’t taken any yet Sad smile
