Thanksgiving Day

I woke up early on Thanksgiving to do the Chesterfield 11th Annual Turkey Trot (5k race).  The race started at 8:30 am so I wanted to get there in plenty of time.

It was pretty cold, so I wore my new workout skirt (ha!) and a long sleeve tee I bought myself in honor of the upcoming Phoenix Half-marathon.

I was cold and tired, and I should have wore a hat or something over my ears!  By the time the race started, my ears were freezing.  In any case, I ran pretty well—it was a crowded course and pretty boring (around a mall), but I kept going pretty well.  I actually thought I would break my last time, but I guess due to the cold and drizzle I wasn’t moving as fast as I thought.  My next race won’t be until mid-December so I’ll have a bit more time in between to train.  And then nothing until the half-marathon in Phoenix, yay!

Results: 32:17, 1269 of 2347, 76 of 172 in my age group (30-34)

Okay, race done, off to eat!

The night before I made my pies and upside down cake.

Pumpkin Pie, Sour Cream Apple Pie, and Cranberry Upside-down Cake.

It was raining pretty hard when it was time to load up the car, so that was annoying.  We headed over to our friends’ house (Laura and Jon) around 11 am.  Chris was making the turkey.

The menu:

Turkey and Gravy

Classic Cranberry Sauce

Grand Marnier Cranberry Relish

Potato Fennel Gratin

Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes

Spicy Cornbread Stuffing

Parmesan Broccoli

Mustard Cauliflower with Lemon Butter

Maple Roasted Squash

Martha’s Mac and Cheese

Yes.  It was ridiculous!  Also, of course, appetizers, dessert, and wine.  The rest of the people came over around 3:00, and we probably ate dinner at 5:30 or so.  The food was fantastic!  (My friend Laura is a tremendous cook).

A sampling of the day’s activities, and my dinner plate.  We cooked, played wii, ate, and talked.  Some people watched football (I did not.)

It also snowed a bit in the afternoon!  Our first snow of the season.  Very pretty!

Okay, one last picture of the pies…and a topping for the pies…

I hope everybody had a wonderful Thanksgiving as well!  It was great to spend the day with good friends.  I am thankful to have so many wonderful people in my life!

So full!

I am so ridiculously full!  I am never eating again 😉  I am thankful for a wonderful, bountiful Thanksgiving dinner with dear friends….it was a wonderful day!

Today was the first snow.  No real accumulation, but snow nonetheless.

Off to bed.  The pies/cake were a huge success!

Thanksgiving Eve

Wow, what a day!  I’m finally sitting down for about the first time.  I’m THANKFUL today for my good health!  Without my health, well, I wouldn’t have anything 😉  But seriously, I’m thankful I am healthy and able-bodied and that I am able to do whatever I need to do. I’m talking both minor ailments such as colds and more major illnesses or handicaps…I’m basically thankful I’m not suffering from anything at all at this time!

I just finished making three desserts and a topping for Thanksgiving tomorrow.  Two are my grandmother’s recipes and two are from the internet.  Here and here.  I’ll post pictures later, don’t want to spoil the surprise!  Suffice it to say that although I did make my own crusts from scratch, and I’m sure they will be tasty…wow my crusts look atrocious.  I struggled with them and finally just did my best.  I really need to work on my pie crust skills.

Today I almost turned off my alarm and skipped Bikram Yoga, but I would have felt too guilty.  I went to my second class today.  It was tough but not as tough as the first one.  The class was taught by the same teacher as yesterday’s but was much larger (probably twice as many people).  It was at 9:30 versus yesterday’s 11:00, and I didn’t get to eat enough beforehand–they say not to eat for three hours beforehand, but I was VERY hungry during class, so I’m pretty sure that was a bad idea.  I’m still not sure how I feel about the classes, but I’ll continue to go during the two week period no matter. Probably will be there sometime on Friday.

When I got out of class, it was POURING rain!  I almost just drove home, but after a few minutes (and a bit of powerade zero 😉  ) I continued with my errands.  Packet pickup for tomorrow’s race and groceries, followed by a quick lunch then a really intense workout with Mike.  Then home to bake!  Now I must get ready to head out to a friend’s potluck dinner.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my readers (particularly my family 🙂 ) !

HBBC:  90 minutes of Yoga:  4.5 points,  Treadmill running 1 mile: 1 points, 60 minutes weight training/core work with Mike: 3 points, Total points for day 8.5.  Total points for week (so far) 30.

Thanksgiving Vacation Begins!

Ah, the sweet feeling of freedom!  Three whole days off.  Tonight I’m doing a long blog post, and I’m going to cover a bunch of stuff.

Firstly, that’s what I’m thankful for today:  vacation time!  I am thankful to have three days off from work.  I am going to be super busy though, but it’s all fun stuff like running, baking pies and cookies, getting ready for a party, that sort of thing.  And really I have FIVE days off, because Saturday’s itty bitty wedding should hardly count.  So I am VERY thankful for the awesome holiday (Thanksgiving) that gives me a long, long weekend.  I shall return next week refreshed and ready to face all of my students again..for three weeks!

Okay, so what have I been up to lately?  My weekend was good, though it didn’t turn out quite as expected—after the mac and cheese class at the Kitchen Conservatory, Chris and I were just too full to continue onto our friend’s party.  With bursting stomachs and mild regrets, we had to head home.  But let me tell you a bit about the class.

DSCI0002DSCI0001

We wore these aprons… There were 12 in the class, and each couple was responsible for a different item.  The menu for the meal was as follows:

Rum & Ginger Cocktail (pictured above, in Chris’s hand)

DSCI0004

Fennel Apple Salad with Apple Cider Vinaigrette

DSCI0009

Ultimate Baked Macaroni & Cheese with Peas & Bacon

DSCI0006

Orzo with Mascarpone & Butter-Poached Lobster

DSCI0011

Souffléed Mac & Cheese with Gouda & Smoked Paprika

DSCI0013

Key Lime Sorbet

Chris and I ended up being responsible for…the salad.  Which was a little boring, but we ended up being glad because we didn’t have to shred a ton of cheese.   We got to take all the recipes home, so we can recreate them (if desired).  My favorite was probably the Lobster Mac, but they were all pretty tasty in my book Smile I also really enjoyed the rum cocktail, though Chris didn’t care for it.  It was a mix of Ginger Beer and Rum.

So, that was Sunday.

Monday:  Taught all day, and then went to the new Harry Potter movie!  We went to see the movie at an Imax theater, so the screen was huge.  I loved the movie!  *SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT* I was so broken up when Dobby died…I always lose it when that happens in the book, and the movie did a great job with that scene.  Just awful!  Also, I am *scared/delighted* that we have the answer to the question nobody asked: “What sort of underwear does Harry Potter wear?”

Tuesday:  Semi-crazy day!  I have been hanging onto a coupon for one week of unlimited Bikram Yoga for a few months now.  For those of you who don’t know, that Yoga that is done in a super hot room.  A friend of mine swears by it, but I have been pretty nervous about giving it a try.  I decided that this would be a good week to do the unlimited week.  Well, I showed up for class today, and they tell me I CAN use my coupon, or I could save that and purchase two weeks of unlimited for $39, for new students only.  So I can’t do that the other way, I must purchase the two weeks first if I want to use it.  I thought about it a bit, and decided to go all the way and really commit myself to three weeks of Bikram.  I figure, that way I’ve definitely given it a shot, and then I’ll either keep it up somewhat (probably more like one class a week or less) or chalk it up to experience.

I had talked to enough people who have gone to the yoga classes to know what to expect.  They are pretty strict there as far as arrivals, no talking, no drinking water during poses, no leaving the room except in emergencies, etc, and I knew that going in.  Anyway, the class was TOUGH.  I would do a few poses, then have to sit/lie down due to feeling overwhelmed by the heat (dizzy, faint, nauseous).  They say that is good, however…  I was drenched in sweat (and yes, the room stinks!) from the beginning…by the end sweat was a part of me.  I made it through the class—I didn’t leave, I didn’t die…and I’m going back tomorrow for more.  I’m told the second class is easier, and the sooner you return the better.

After that I had a quick lunch with my friend at a smoothie/salad place right nearby (brilliant marketing plan—people feel that they have burned tons of calories so can eat “healthy” foods that are likely stacked with calories…), went to teach my final students before break, and then to the gym for running.  Got a Thanksgiving race coming up!  I did 3 miles running then logged six miles on the bike waiting for Chris to finish his workout.

Tomorrow’s plan:  Bikram Yoga, pick up race packet for Thanksgiving race, last minute grocery shopping, workout with Mike, BAKE PIES AND CAKE, potluck dinner…pretty busy day for my vacation, don’t you think?  Should be great fun!

So for the HBBC90 minutes of Yoga: 4.5 points, Treadmill Running 3 miles: 3 points, Stationary Biking 6 miles: 2 points. Total points for day (only got 5 fruit/veggie servings Sad smile ): 9.5 points. I hope half points are allowed!

At least I have jobs

I am finally done with work for the day.  Mondays are 11 hour days 🙂

And I’m thankful.  I was driving home today (to teach for over 2 more hours) and I thought, hey, I am lucky to be so in demand and to have work that keeps me so busy.  I know lots of folks are unemployed, so thank goodness I have a job!  (Well, thank goodness I have 18 jobs…).  I am glad I have the opportunities I have right now for teaching, and I know that what I am doing now will only help me in the future, so for that I am thankful!

(and now, Harry Potter time 🙂  I’ll blog more another day…so tired…yet so ready to see this movie!)

HBBC:  No workout today (day of rest) but I made sure to eat 7 servings of fruit/vegetable!  Which I don’t do very often, so I’m pretty proud.  1 point.

It’s getting to be a really diverse group of things.  What about today?  Today I am thankful that I live so near a park that I can run in!  I love being able to run in the park and not have to worry about stopping at lights or dodging cars.  It’s a beautiful place to run in and watch other people running, walking their dogs, riding bikes, etc.  I live just five minutes walk from the park, and it’s really wonderful and convenient.  Today I ran approximately 7 miles in the park…whew, my legs are exhausted!

Today’s workout:  7 mile run, 7 points for the HBBC
