I am a violinist. I also enjoy running, working out, reading, and hanging with my friends and cat.

Year in Review/Decade in Review

I think this is the first year in a few years that I wasn’t glad to see go away. For me, it was a pretty good year overall, though every year has its ups and downs. I know when I’ve had a good year, others haven’t, and when others have had good years, I might not have. I feel lucky that this feels like overall a pretty good year.

2019:

I recorded music for a play. I played with the Who and Weird Al Yankovic. My band put out a CD. I taught hundreds of lessons. I relearned how to cross stitch. I stood in a campsite in Banff as a herd of elk walked through. Louie and I picked out a new car together. I made date pudding and served Christmas Dinner to 12 people. I went to Branson and saw Dolly Parton’s DP Stampede and drove a golf cart. I hiked to a Tea House in Lake Louise and to the top of a mountain in Yellowstone. I saw many cities of prairie dogs, bison, black bears, and a grizzly bear. We lost our cat Miles. I played more weddings than I would like to be able to count. I welcomed my new nephew to the world. I watched a raccoon walk right up my front steps. I went down a bunch of slides at the City Museum. I walked on a glacier. I ate poutine while looking at the same glacier. I ran a few 5k’s. I made authentic British Scones. I had lobster. I played some operas and some musicals. We finished remodeling the upstairs bathroom shower. I read more books that I could possibly name, and particularly enjoyed the Outlander Series and the Philippa Gregory books.

Decade in Review “the ‘10s”:

I got married, got divorced, and then I met Louie. I made some great friends, but lost some too.  I lost quite a few pets but gained a couple. I lost my grandmother and two uncles and I gained a niece and nephew and a brother-in-law. I learned to play viola and I taught thousands of violin lessons (I won’t begin to count). I paid off my student loans. I ran a bunch of races. I visited France, Italy, Canada, various Caribbean Islands, and lots of different states. I stayed in a teepee, and slept in a tent while a bear attacked the car nearby. I hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back in one day and lived to tell the tale (don’t do it!). I read thousands (I assume) of books and watched quite a lot of television shows as well.  I baked many cookies and quite a few pies. I got better at cooking. I learned to pee in the woods while hiking. I experienced a lot of self-doubt, both personally and professionally and worked through some of it.

As I sit in my house (“comfy and cozy” as my niece Athena described it), typing on my laptop, wearing my Glacier Park t-shirt and gray joggers, things seem pretty good. I’m warm, I’m dry, I’m cozy, I’m texting with a few friends as I type (distraction-free this blog post isn’t), and I still have 6 more days before I get back to teaching…life is pretty darned good. They say hindsight is 2020, but it seems to me that for today, foresight is 2020.

Happy Holidays

My goodness, the last week was a whirlwind. I’m sitting along in my house now, well, alone with my cat, and it just seems so quiet.

This year Louie and I decided to celebrate Hanukkah as well-he has a tradition of celebrating Hanukkah as well alongside Christmas in his family background and I thought it would be nice to learn about it as well. We lit the candles nearly every night and it was very beautiful.

And then nearly my whole family came to stay for the week for Christmas. I think I decided on this back in August and I certainly spent enough time planning. I will say, my planning paid off, because we had tons of food and plenty of fun, though I probably made too much food.

(Athena and my mom singing the 12 days of Christmas)

Oh my gosh, we had a wonderful time all being together! My sister Leslie arrived first on the 23rd with her husband Peter and two kids, then my parents the next day. Christmas Eve we woke up early and started baking and cooking, and then I worked two church services, and we  had a lovely party in between services (shrimp, herring, potatoes with cheese, cheeseballs, cookies, and more) with Louie’s family as well.

I finally got home around 11:30 pm and was so glad to officially be on vacation!

Athena and Luca

(This was the day before Christmas—the stockings were hung on the chimney with care)

Christmas morning also started early, as my niece Athena is 5 and was very excited for her stocking and for everybody to get up (mostly the latter—she had already received a fair number of gifts and wasn’t as excited about them as we might have hoped, but she did her best to show gratitude and certainly was thrilled with her gift from Santa, a small stuffed flying pig).

IMG_3492

We opened gifts and stockings for a bit, then had our family’s somewhat traditional Christmas brunch with cinnamon rolls, cheese grits and a breakfast casserole with eggs and sausage. After that it was more cooking because we were doing a sit down Christmas dinner for 12!

IMG_3506

(This called for the selfie stick!) I had been running around like a madman to prepare this meal, and the two meals prior, and it paid off (mostly, as I did have a few “get out of the kitchen” or “I don’t want to have to tell you how to help, I just want you to help” breakdowns).

One of my favorite things we did this year was my grandmother’s date pudding recipe which I will blog about separately as you all need this recipe in your life. I may also mention some of the other recipes later as well, as mostly I loved everything we made and the majority of it was foods we had loved in our past. This was definitely a throwback Christmas time where we all tried to have our favorites.

My nephew Luca really loved my dad. We thought maybe he thought he was Santa Smile

The next day was supposed to be nearly 70 degrees outside (thanks climate change) so we decided it was a good day for the zoo. It was also Louie’s last day with the family as he was flying out the next day to visit his dad’s side of the family, so Athena was eager to spend quality time with him. We hit the zoo early to beat the crowds and had a great time walking around seeing all the animals.

We are standing behind a sign about the Three Sisters.

The rest of the afternoon we just relaxed around the house, taking a walk up to the nearby playground (though I don’t have kids, it’s great to live in a neighborhood with a nearby playground), and ate leftovers. Then we headed over to Louie’s mom’s house for dinner, where she served a traditional Swedish feast of meatballs, potatoes, and Princess Cake.

Louie left early the next morning…well, he was supposed to. His flight was originally at 7 am but didn’t leave until 8:30 pm, but it just kept getting pushed back so he sadly spent the day at the airport, but he said he got some good work done. Some of the rest of us went to the City Museum, which I always say isn’t my favorite and is too loud, but I ended up having a great time.

IMG_1417IMG_1567

We saw a hilarious one man circus act as well. We didn’t get home until after 2 pm and ate a lunch of leftovers again (we kept chipping away at the Christmas dinner dishes and desserts) before going to Grbic to celebrate my parents’ 51st wedding anniversary.

IMG_3563

After those few busy days, the last full day we decided just to relax for real. We did hit up the playground, but mostly we all just played games and relaxed around the house. Athena learned to play Uno and some of us did some crafting as well.

IMG_3600IMG_3625

Everybody left on the 29th—my parents and Leslie’s family after lunch, and my sister Carrie in the evening—we went to Target and watched some Netflix before she left…and now it’s just me!

IMG_3634

I don’t have much going on this week so I plan to work out every day, do some practicing, put away the Christmas decorations, and finish up a few small cross-stitch projects. It’s going to be relaxing! I have a few things planned with friends as well, but it’s mostly just me and Muriel until Louie gets back.

How was your holiday celebration, if you had one? Are you doing anything for New Year’s Eve?

Christmas Eve Eve

I have this one very distinct memory of my Grandpa on my mom’s side. (We called him Grandpa Miller). He had a stroke when I was in elementary school and was never the same after, and then passed away when I was in college, so my memories of him are from when I was quite young. He had these wonderful old-timey looking glasses, and I recall sitting up front in the middle in a car with a big seat all the way across (this was back in the day when car safety rules were a little different) and he leaned over and said, it’s Christmas Eve Eve! I realized I blogged this story a few years ago…it’s a strong memory I have…is it even true or am I combining things? Who knows! It’s real to me, and I remember my Grandpa was a fun guy, smart, and always had a twinkle in his eye. My Grandma on that side was always laughing too, trying to get us to eat cookies and take sandwiches with us, saying “ai-yiy-yiy” and running around trying to keep everything under control. She also tended to serve cookies people had given her that I didn’t think were very good, like ones with redhots on them, and was also a big fan of jello salad molds and ham loaf. We all thought our Grandma on the other side of the family was a better cook, but we loved both of them Smile and nothing was more fun that when they would join us in a game (board, not reindeer.)

Christmas time always brings up these memories. I’m hosting my family this Christmas, and my sister Leslie and her family are arriving in a few hours, my parents tomorrow, and my sister Carrie the following day. I wanted to make this a wonderful Christmas for my niece Athena, since she might remember it as an adult. I hope she looks back and says, that was a fun time we had in St Louis!

It’s been a busy week. I’ve been getting the house ready, Louie’s been finishing the new shower, and we’ve both been working as well. I have ONE MORE DAY and then I’m on winter break, and it will be glorious. I am completely worn out and running on adrenaline, sugar, and coffee, but honestly, it’s been a fun December. Playing gigs is fun because you see colleagues and I’ve gotten to work with a lot of my favorites this month. I also really enjoy holiday music, because I’m a sap like that. I am looking forward to January though, and relaxing and reconnecting with some friends I haven’t seen much of since before Thanksgiving.

I hope you are having a wonderful second night of Hanukkah, or a wonderful Christmas Eve Eve, or simply a great night enjoying some downtime and/or time with friends. In other words, Happy Holidays! I wish you the best!

Let it snow

We had a snowy weekend! Sunday afternoon it started snowing off and on, through Monday evening. I had a rehearsal Sunday afternoon that ended up getting rescheduled for Tuesday, right during my teaching day. I technically could have said I wasn’t free during that time, but it was for a concert this Friday that I thought was important to do well, so all my students got a break. (Only one was able to reschedule, unfortunately.) I have to remember to give them their holiday gifts in January—I got all my students a little token gift (inspiration from another teacher friend, a small nail clippers! because you need short nails to play the violin, and candy).

We ended up starting on finishing the bathroom remodel on Monday (tiling the shower stall to make it usable for next week is the plan) and then working into Tuesday morning as well. I helped Louie with the tiling on Monday night and Tuesday morning, but there are things that he needs to do while I’m working the next few days. We are on a tight schedule and I can’t quite imagine getting it all done in time, but I’m hopeful.

The living room is full of bathroom related stuff. I’m doing my best not to go insane because I’d been working the past few weeks to clean everything up and now this bathroom project is really messing up that, but I am hopeful that behind the bathroom clutter (and also similar in the basement) it will be better, and that getting the shower done is a general positive step in the right direction and I will get over the fact that the timing couldn’t actually be worse. Yes, it’s better timing to get a second shower working in time for extra visitors, but this was already a busy week jam packed with errands and extra things to do.

IMG_3408

I got these amazing looking cinnamon rolls baked on Monday (and frozen). I used my grandmother’s recipe, which rises overnight, so I started them on Sunday afternoon. Some of her recipe is a little vague, but I managed, and then I did decide to use a butter cream icing instead of simple a powdered sugar one. I read a lot of blogs online telling me not to freeze all my cookies and cinnamon rolls, and how you should freeze the dough and freshly bake them, but honestly people, how do you prepare ahead otherwise? My mom has always been the queen of freezing and thawing baked goods (and other things) and it’s always turned out fine. In any case, I got to a post by the Pioneer Woman about cinnamon rolls and she goes over all the ways you can freeze them (unbaked, uniced, done) and basically she says, yeah, I freeze them iced and reheat and they taste amazing, and I felt like we are all vindicated.

I finished this little ornament for the tree. I like to think the cat is Miles.

In any case, I’m off to run some errands (grocery shopping mostly) and later I have a double rehearsal (that means two rehearsals). Louie is hard at work on the bathroom this morning (the semester is over so he has a more flexible schedule) and hopefully we can do it all!

Home Stretch

One more week of teaching…

I tell you. This December has been the busiest. Maybe because of work, maybe because in between working I’m getting ready to host my whole family (minus my brother) for Christmas…time is flying by, but I’m having a good time preparing, playing a ton of fun gigs, and teaching my students. It’s just…hectic and there’s a lot happening, and my life is full of lists and online shopping.

I’m probably buying too many gifts for people. And baking too many cookies, and having too many decorations, and all of that excess. I know that we are supposed to slow down and have experiences and spend quality time, but the truth is Louie and I work entirely too much for that—he with a full time job and working towards a doctorate, and nobody who hasn’t done that truly understands how much he works outside of work, and me with a variety of part-time jobs that usually add up to about 1 and a half full time jobs, and we are just too busy. I don’t say that to brag or to make you think I’m overwhelmed…it’s just the truth of the matter. So I lie in bed at the end of the day and sometimes just scroll on my phone, and find things online to buy that will make our lives easier in the short term, or something that I want my niece to have, or a little something new to decorate for the holidays because my holiday décor (Christmas mostly, but we are celebrating Hanukkah this year too for Louie) brings me great joy. I sent out photo cards this year, and still have a few to send but most are out, and that brought me joy as well. In fact, most of what I’m doing is bringing me joy because this is my favorite time of year.

I’m not stressed, really. I’m exhausted, and I’m full of thoughts and to-do lists and music and making sure that each night I know what to wear and what to bring for the next day, but I’m not stressed or overwhelmed. I’m just getting it done. I feel grateful I have the opportunity to play so many concerts this month, and I honestly love holiday music. So I’m feeling good, though you are saying, yeah, lady, but you’re writing about this on a Friday night. True. I’m at home, and I didn’t go to Ikea with Louie’s family to celebrate whatever the name of the event there tonight is because I was teaching late, but I also hate crowds, so I’m fine with that. We had the holiday party at my college job today which is my favorite work event of the year (okay, it’s the only work party all year, but it’s great fun to see everybody) and then taught, and now I’m just relaxing and probably going to bed early because tomorrow I have three different things happening from 9:30 am to 10 pm, so it’s a big day!

IMG_3336

This isn’t the most recent picture of the décor, so I’ve added a few things: stockings and a star for the tree.

IMG_3341

The crowd at Thanksgiving. We went to Louie’s mom’s house and it was a lot of fun, with delicious food.

IMG_3329

Anyway, time to relax! And…there’s only 11 more days until vacation…I’m doing a few gigs between Christmas and Epiphany, but I think it’s like two weddings and that’s all. It’ll be a nice time.

Nearly Thanksgiving Break

You guys! It’s Tuesday, and I am nearly on vacation for three days. It will be glorious.

Well, it will be busy. I have some work to do around the house, getting some areas organized. This is a constant battle, mostly because when I moved into this house it could have been on hoarders…I say that will all due respect to Louie…and then I brought my stuff too. And both of us like to have our things, and Louie is one of those never throw something away because it might be useful people, and I enjoy saving paper things…and we both have a lot of books. I do try to cull and give things away, but the reality is: I can only give away my things and I can’t decide what of his things to give away, and this can cause issues, because there are areas of the house that are his things. I’m not trying to air our dirty laundry on the blog, but just to say: you can’t Kon Mari somebody else’s stuff. And when that person works full time and goes to grad school, time is a premium.

But I’m hopeful to get a few more things gotten rid of over the break. I have a list and a plan of attack. I’m also hoping to do some holiday baking (cookies and breads), get some good exercise and get outside, watch a few tv programs, and finish at least one of my cross stitch projects. Oh, and decorate for Christmas! This is likely too much to fit into three days, but I’ll try. Three days, you ask? Why, don’t you have 3 days, plus the weekend? HAHAHA you must be new here. I don’t have weekends off, I’m a musician! I work again starting Saturday noon, and then until Christmas. Not constantly, of course, as college is winding down and therefore I have much more time during some days than before. Oh, I love the holidays though…I love baking, and I love having a fat bank account from all the gigs. And I got all new wrapping paper this year: I’d forgotten until recently that some of my old wrapping paper got wet in the sewer backup in the spring and it was for the best—that stuff was too thin anyway. I splurged and got some thicker paper.

Last weekend was a lot of fun. I played two shows for Mannheim Steamroller on Saturday, really getting into the Christmas spirit. It’s a little early still, even though everybody is going crazy and decorating—for me the Christmas season officially starts after Thanksgiving and not before, though if I have to play some music before, fine. I just feel like if the festivities start taking up too much of the year, then it isn’t special enough when it does get here. This is not to say I haven’t spent the past few months planning for Christmas: planning and actually decorating/celebrating are entirely different.

Sunday Louie and I got up early to run the Hot Chocolate 5k in Forest Park. It was fun, but I was disappointed in my time. I will just have to keep at it and get faster! (I have been running more regularly only since May of this year, and one goal for next year is to keep at it.) I was annoyed by the crowds of walkers and those who enjoy walking in horizontal lines 3 or 4 across…even as we approached the finish line and the road was narrower!

After the race I didn’t have too much time to relax as then it was Studio Recital time. I had 18 students play on this one and it was a great success. I suppose I might try to hire a pianist for the next one, as some of the parents ask about that. Others are perfectly happy to have less to worry about, which is why I don’t bother! I play a lot of duets with them in the lessons, but for the recitals, with a few exceptions, I tend to let the kids stand alone. They were mostly Suzuki book 1 to 3 level, with a few in 4 and 5 (and a few O’Connor tunes) in case you are a teacher reading this. Oh, and I have one viola student, who played a book 5 level piece as well. I do have a few more advanced students, but I didn’t get any of my high schoolers on this recital…they are just too busy, and I don’t require recital attendance though I strongly recommend it.

And then yesterday I was at my one college all day, and had a string ensemble concert at night. I coach the string ensemble class there, and this semester has been challenging. They managed to pull off a decent performance, but it wasn’t what I’d hoped for the semester. It’s a small class, and when one student doesn’t pull their weight it brings everybody down, and we had some attendance issues. But nonetheless I was pleased, and they did something hard! To me this is the essence of performing when younger, to push yourself to do something hard that you might be dreading…it makes you so much stronger! As I get older the more I realize that such struggles as a younger person are so important…it’s a balance between pushing them to challenge themselves and setting them up for failure though. Oh and sometimes they enjoy performing and realize it can be fun, or they love the accolades after, and those are the ones that really get into music.

What are your Thanksgiving plans? Are you going to be Black Friday shopping?
