The Arch

Yesterday was one of those days—up early, driving all over town. We had rehearsal in Edwardsville for the upcoming Chamber Project St Louis concert.

IMG_5653

I was stuck in a bit of traffic on the bridge from Illinois to Missouri—the arch is always a beacon of light! As much as I make fun of my city, I prefer it to being on the “wrong side of the river.” (no offense to my Illinois readers 😉 )

After rehearsal I had a concert at the First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood for Good Friday. Then it was off to the school for teaching, but first a quick lunch–

IMG_5654

Lunch at Panera, or St Louis Bread Company for those of us here. I have a thing for the broccoli cheddar soup.

IMG_5657

I literally almost fell asleep during some of my teaching. Not good. Probably should have gone to Starbucks for a stronger coffee, but I do like the coffee at Bread Co too.

IMG_5658

I had an hour off due to some students still being on spring break and spent most of the time lying on the floor, looking sad.

IMG_5661

Not sure if I was more or less sad than this creature? (Chris sent me this during the day to make me feel better…at least I wasn’t SO tired!)

After teaching we met up with some friends at Square One Brewery for drinks and dinner.  Then I caught the end of the Duke game at home (woo hoo, elite 8!).

Morning came pretty early—more teaching today.

IMG_5664

I took some coffee with me. I had a good day of teaching, and had time for some practice as well. It’s nice to not be practicing excerpts…

IMG_5667

Still looked pretty tired though! (Oh, hey, look I’m a blogger taking selfies of me looking tired…nobody wants to see that, right..giant eye bags…hair not bad though—who thinks I should go lighter for spring/summer?)

When I got home it was cheesecake making time. Hypothetically it was running time, but it was raining…I could have gone to the gym, but I was exhausted and lame instead. I wasn’t going to run in the rain because I think I’ve been sick enough this year so far. (I know technically the rain wouldn’t make me sick, but I’m just not willing to chance it at this point, seriously, I’ve been sick so much since 2013 started…and being cold and rainy sounded miserable.)

I’ll tell you more about the cheesecake in the future. I haven’t quite finished it yet, but the batter tastes AMAZING. It’s for Easter dinner.

Tomorrow is Friday (a collection of random thoughts)

It’s weird because it feels like today is Monday. That’s fair enough considering I work all day tomorrow and Saturday…Sunday is of course Easter which means a church service in the morning (super excited to play for what I understand is an all-Latin mass for this one!)…and then Monday should feel like Friday but it’ll actually be Monday…did I confuse you completely yet? Or, more likely…bore you?

IMG_5626

We had a freak snowstorm on Sunday, as you probably know.

IMG_5616

I saw this on facebook the next day.

This is what I love to hate about St Louis—people think this is unusual.  Maybe Cleveland was crazy too, but we had plenty of warm one day, cold and snowy the next. It’s called: weather. It happens everywhere, along with most things that people here tend to think are “only in St Louis.”

I have said many times: the things that people think are unique to St Louis generally aren’t, and the thing St Louisians think are normal everywhere often are actually unique to St Louis.  I’d name them, but I’m tired and I don’t want to see like a huge jerk.

Bathroom selfie! I got a new workout top at Target and wanted to instagram it.

Which eventually led to this “Inspirational photo”…thanks Tracy! I think it’s important to feel good when you’re working out. I love longer tops because I’m not a huge fan of showing my belly when I’m doing burpees or thrusters or whatever other stuff is named that involves jumping or leaping or pushing my arms up towards the air.

Thanks for your kind comments about my last post. I’m fine. I just get tired of the world I live in sometimes and wish I could change it. I can try, or I can simply choose to live a different life than most in society do.  As one of my Suzuki teacher trainers said (Susan Kempter): we as violin teachers can offer our families an alternative. I feel that I live that alternative as well.

I was wearing a hooded sweatshirt the other night and tweeted about it. I’m told that everybody calls these hoodies. That’s from a race, back when I used to run…oh and I’m doing a half marathon next weekend. And I signed up for a fall marathon. This will actually happen because we all know I have tons of time in the summer to train. 2013 just hasn’t been quite what I planned but I really feel like things have turned a corner as far as my physical and mental health and my schedule.

IMG_5646

This was one of the most delicious tacos I’ve ever had. Imagine a taco made of cool ranch doritos. Okay? There you have it. People tend to either love or hate Taco Bell. You can perhaps guess where my feelings lie.

Tell me something random.

Another snowy day

It looks like the weather people were fairly correct. It did indeed start snowing this morning and has continued so far. I will never get caught up on my makeup lessons at this rate. I feel like they are just piling on my head and I am collapsing. (I’m exaggerating, but I’m frustrated with the weather and the amount of times I’ve been sick this semester.)

So today is a day spent at home. I did some practicing for the upcoming Chamber Project St Louis concert and now I’m just relaxing. Chris’s parents are here and Chris is at a concert.  Tonight is likely basketball or a movie. Exciting stuff!

IMG_5592

The weather yesterday on my run. (yes, I’ve been doing some running…oh, and Mike corrected me—I dead lifted 110 pounds, not 105)

IMG_5609

And the weather today. The road in front of our house is surprisingly clear, so that’s a good thing.

Dinner at Trattoria Marcella Friday night was incredible.  I’m considering making a pre-marathon reservation there for Leslie and I, though the night before might be better as far as being more able to eat rich food and drink some wine.

We had more wine last night at Vin de Set with our friends Sarah and Jason. I especially love when you wake up in the morning and have red wine lips. Scrubbing your lips with the toothbrush to get rid of the wine stains is both exfoliating and strangely satisfying.

I’m hoping this picture becomes more impressive than right now.  If you follow me on twitter (which you totally should as I’m crazy entertaining there) I’ll keep posting pictures.

Tonight: Crock pot salsa chicken. This is my favorite easy dinner and we wanted to do something in case we got snowed it. Take jar of salsa. Take 3 or 4 frozen chicken chicken breasts. Combine in crock pot. Cook. Optional: add cilantro, corn, black beans, or lime juice. After 4 hours on high/8 hours on low, shred chicken and serve over rice, or in a tortilla, or plain. However you want.

I should do a pinterest worthy picture so you could pin this post for me and I could get famous! But meh. I find raw chicken in a green sauce isn’t necessarily the most appetizing thing. It will be tasty though. I promise you that.

Hey look.  Music! (Isn’t one trio enough? Why does Schumann have to write such long pieces?)

Power Outage

After I did a few things yesterday (errands and an airport run for a friend), I decided I wanted to be lazy (continue being) and watch TV and maybe a movie, all night long.

photo

While I was watching I could hear a big storm coming through, but I didn’t think anything of it—I was safe and cozy in my home…until the power went out.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!

Step one: locate candles and flashlight.  Step two: go out to car to charge phone and bit more.  Step three: Annoy people on twitter?

A picture of the houses in the area from my car. You can how dark it is 😉

After about 2 1/2 hours the power did come back on, luckily.  I’m more accustomed to extensive power outages, OR power outages where you can’t run water either (at my parents’ house if you lose power, you lose water too because it is from a well, so you get ONE flush. Use it wisely—) so this really wasn’t a big deal at all. And I started rereading the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Do you guys remember or were you affected by the big power outage in the fall of 2003? I was just moving back to Cleveland, caravaning with my sister Leslie when the power went out. Things that suck: trying to move into a new apartment when there is no electricity or food, and all of the stores and restaurants have shut down because they have to power. We spent the night eating dry “Honey Bunches of Oats” and sweating from lack of fans and having to share one bed since that was all that we could manage to set up in the dark with just a flashlight.

The next day wasn’t much better—some restaurants were open so we were able to eat, but the restaurant didn’t have fountain Diet Coke! It was a nightmare.

We did finally get our power back on a few days later and in retrospect it was a wonderful adventure. Considering that the day I moved to Charlotte was September 11, 2001, the great Northeast Blackout of 2003 was really no big deal. I think the day we moved to St Louis was really uneventful in comparison though—the key is to have a day that doesn’t have a Wikipedia entry on it (the best I can find is it was the day Barack Obama was officially nominated for the Democratic Candidate for President, but that was a fairly foregone conclusion at that point anyway…). And I’m cheating a bit—my move to Charlotte was a multi day process—one day I moved from Cleveland to my parents house, then from there to Charlotte, and I made more than one trip.

My sister sent this picture of her new kitty, Catalunya. I wanted to just share it randomly.  I don’t know how her little body is able to support that head…

Were you affected by the blackout in 2003? I probably wouldn’t remember it so strongly if I hadn’t also been moving at the same time.

Nearer my god to thee

You guys.

The violin used by Wallace Hartley as the Titanic sank

It’s the violin from the Titanic. Go here to read the article about it! (Also here to read another article I just saw a student shared with me!)

I had a good day on twitter.

goodtwitterday

I’m right, and I have amazing intonation. What else could a girl want?

(I debated tweeting this screencap…but instead I’m blogging about it.)

And one of my friends sent out this tweet. We are obsessed with the banana emoji on many levels (not the least of which is my nickname for years has been Hannah Banana…).

I’m coming up on Spring Break from my school. I have a couple of days off teaching, and I’ll have some spring cleaning and catching up around the house to do. Mainly I’ll be blogging and watching TV I imagine 😉 And Twittering, and taking pictures of the cat, and doing some extra working out, and maybe even practicing again (I’ve been taking some time off to let my shoulder recover to not risk another incident like last year.)

Hey, there’s a pair of socks on your back!

Yeah, I should probably get to bed, huh? Happy Friday!

Is it Tuesday already?

You know you’re in a weird place when people ask how your weekend was and you stop and think, when WAS the weekend?

My view from the pit—Gina Galati and Steve Jarvi welcoming the audience.

image_4

I spent a lot of time in the pit for Winter Opera St Louis‘s production of Tosca.  I thought it went really well.  That’s the end of the season—nothing until the late fall.  The company has been doing one fall production and two winter productions for a couple of years now.

I also played a couple of weddings.  It’s not really wedding season yet, but the post holiday lull is definitely over and things are kicking back into gear.

image_5

I took some pictures of my cat.

image_6

And I got my hair cut today.  I went on a little bit of a self portrait kick, because I realized I’d been feeling bad about my appearance for the past month or so and hadn’t really taken many photos (for me), and I like my new haircut!  I also don’t think I look nearly as fat as I feel…spring is here though, and I’m back into running and working out regularly so I know I’ll be back to “myself’ (aka lose the five pounds or so I gained stress eating my way through February and then into March).

Serious Hannah.

Out on the back porch.

The middle picture was pre eyebrow shaping, which frizzed out my hair a little, but I still like it.  The receptionist was laughing at me, but I told her I was taking pictures to send to my husband (I did do this of course!) and no, I didn’t need her to take one of me.

I’ve been taking time off practicing.  My shoulder is definitely better because of it.  (Better.  Not perfect.)

Did you read my previous post about the Dirty Girl Run in September?  I know it seems a long way away but that time will fly!  Come out and run/walk/get muddy with me.
