Another snowy day

It looks like the weather people were fairly correct. It did indeed start snowing this morning and has continued so far. I will never get caught up on my makeup lessons at this rate. I feel like they are just piling on my head and I am collapsing. (I’m exaggerating, but I’m frustrated with the weather and the amount of times I’ve been sick this semester.)

So today is a day spent at home. I did some practicing for the upcoming Chamber Project St Louis concert and now I’m just relaxing. Chris’s parents are here and Chris is at a concert.  Tonight is likely basketball or a movie. Exciting stuff!

The weather yesterday on my run. (yes, I’ve been doing some running…oh, and Mike corrected me—I dead lifted 110 pounds, not 105)

And the weather today. The road in front of our house is surprisingly clear, so that’s a good thing.

Dinner at Trattoria Marcella Friday night was incredible.  I’m considering making a pre-marathon reservation there for Leslie and I, though the night before might be better as far as being more able to eat rich food and drink some wine.

We had more wine last night at Vin de Set with our friends Sarah and Jason. I especially love when you wake up in the morning and have red wine lips. Scrubbing your lips with the toothbrush to get rid of the wine stains is both exfoliating and strangely satisfying.

I’m hoping this picture becomes more impressive than right now.  If you follow me on twitter (which you totally should as I’m crazy entertaining there) I’ll keep posting pictures.

Tonight: Crock pot salsa chicken. This is my favorite easy dinner and we wanted to do something in case we got snowed it. Take jar of salsa. Take 3 or 4 frozen chicken chicken breasts. Combine in crock pot. Cook. Optional: add cilantro, corn, black beans, or lime juice. After 4 hours on high/8 hours on low, shred chicken and serve over rice, or in a tortilla, or plain. However you want.

I should do a pinterest worthy picture so you could pin this post for me and I could get famous! But meh. I find raw chicken in a green sauce isn’t necessarily the most appetizing thing. It will be tasty though. I promise you that.

Hey look.  Music! (Isn’t one trio enough? Why does Schumann have to write such long pieces?)

Power Outage

After I did a few things yesterday (errands and an airport run for a friend), I decided I wanted to be lazy (continue being) and watch TV and maybe a movie, all night long.

photo

While I was watching I could hear a big storm coming through, but I didn’t think anything of it—I was safe and cozy in my home…until the power went out.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!

Step one: locate candles and flashlight.  Step two: go out to car to charge phone and bit more.  Step three: Annoy people on twitter?

A picture of the houses in the area from my car. You can how dark it is 😉

After about 2 1/2 hours the power did come back on, luckily.  I’m more accustomed to extensive power outages, OR power outages where you can’t run water either (at my parents’ house if you lose power, you lose water too because it is from a well, so you get ONE flush. Use it wisely—) so this really wasn’t a big deal at all. And I started rereading the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Do you guys remember or were you affected by the big power outage in the fall of 2003? I was just moving back to Cleveland, caravaning with my sister Leslie when the power went out. Things that suck: trying to move into a new apartment when there is no electricity or food, and all of the stores and restaurants have shut down because they have to power. We spent the night eating dry “Honey Bunches of Oats” and sweating from lack of fans and having to share one bed since that was all that we could manage to set up in the dark with just a flashlight.

The next day wasn’t much better—some restaurants were open so we were able to eat, but the restaurant didn’t have fountain Diet Coke! It was a nightmare.

We did finally get our power back on a few days later and in retrospect it was a wonderful adventure. Considering that the day I moved to Charlotte was September 11, 2001, the great Northeast Blackout of 2003 was really no big deal. I think the day we moved to St Louis was really uneventful in comparison though—the key is to have a day that doesn’t have a Wikipedia entry on it (the best I can find is it was the day Barack Obama was officially nominated for the Democratic Candidate for President, but that was a fairly foregone conclusion at that point anyway…). And I’m cheating a bit—my move to Charlotte was a multi day process—one day I moved from Cleveland to my parents house, then from there to Charlotte, and I made more than one trip.

My sister sent this picture of her new kitty, Catalunya. I wanted to just share it randomly.  I don’t know how her little body is able to support that head…

Were you affected by the blackout in 2003? I probably wouldn’t remember it so strongly if I hadn’t also been moving at the same time.

Nearer my god to thee

You guys.

The violin used by Wallace Hartley as the Titanic sank

It’s the violin from the Titanic. Go here to read the article about it! (Also here to read another article I just saw a student shared with me!)

I had a good day on twitter.

goodtwitterday

I’m right, and I have amazing intonation. What else could a girl want?

(I debated tweeting this screencap…but instead I’m blogging about it.)

And one of my friends sent out this tweet. We are obsessed with the banana emoji on many levels (not the least of which is my nickname for years has been Hannah Banana…).

I’m coming up on Spring Break from my school. I have a couple of days off teaching, and I’ll have some spring cleaning and catching up around the house to do. Mainly I’ll be blogging and watching TV I imagine 😉 And Twittering, and taking pictures of the cat, and doing some extra working out, and maybe even practicing again (I’ve been taking some time off to let my shoulder recover to not risk another incident like last year.)

Hey, there’s a pair of socks on your back!

Yeah, I should probably get to bed, huh? Happy Friday!

Is it Tuesday already?

You know you’re in a weird place when people ask how your weekend was and you stop and think, when WAS the weekend?

My view from the pit—Gina Galati and Steve Jarvi welcoming the audience.

I spent a lot of time in the pit for Winter Opera St Louis‘s production of Tosca.  I thought it went really well.  That’s the end of the season—nothing until the late fall.  The company has been doing one fall production and two winter productions for a couple of years now.

I also played a couple of weddings.  It’s not really wedding season yet, but the post holiday lull is definitely over and things are kicking back into gear.

I took some pictures of my cat.

And I got my hair cut today.  I went on a little bit of a self portrait kick, because I realized I’d been feeling bad about my appearance for the past month or so and hadn’t really taken many photos (for me), and I like my new haircut!  I also don’t think I look nearly as fat as I feel…spring is here though, and I’m back into running and working out regularly so I know I’ll be back to “myself’ (aka lose the five pounds or so I gained stress eating my way through February and then into March).

Out on the back porch.

The middle picture was pre eyebrow shaping, which frizzed out my hair a little, but I still like it.  The receptionist was laughing at me, but I told her I was taking pictures to send to my husband (I did do this of course!) and no, I didn’t need her to take one of me.

I’ve been taking time off practicing.  My shoulder is definitely better because of it.  (Better.  Not perfect.)

Did you read my previous post about the Dirty Girl Run in September?  I know it seems a long way away but that time will fly!  Come out and run/walk/get muddy with me.

Chamber Project St Louis at the Art Museum

The chamber group I play with occasionally, Chamber Project St Louis, performed at the St Louis Art Museum last night.  We are repeating the concert this next Friday (I included this and next to be super clear that I’m not talking about yesterday, how’s that for grammar?) at the Chapel (visit CPSTL‘ s website for more information on all of that.)

The concert poster.

Last night’s venue.

Warming up amongst the art.  My stand was behind the LINE but no guards yelled at me.

Performing one of the pieces.  That’s my friend Laura standing because the piece (Derek Bermel’s Soul Garden) was for viola and string quintet, which meant her part was more important and we thought she should stand up to reflect that.  She sounded great.

Jen and Vince playing some Piazzolla.

If you are local and don’t have plans next Friday night, I’d recommend you come see me (us) play!  The tickets are very reasonable ESPECIALLY since they include two drinks (alcohol AND non-alcoholic beverages are offered.)  If you have any questions, feel free to ask, but remember, it’s a concert for everyone, not just classical music buffs.  Plus I’ll be wearing more color for the next one, which should be incentive enough.  Maybe I’ll wear purple.

I know I’ve made this joke a bunch, but really, what is a weekend?

Is that title too long?  Mike asked me this morning how my weekend was.  I laughed at him.  WHAT?

In the pit at Winter Opera St Louis

Me in the pit.  My friend Sarah caught me taking a selfie and she may have mocked me mercilessly and used the phrase “duck face.”  I think you can tell that’s not a duck face, right?  That’s just my face, and I consider self portraits to be important documentation of what is happening in my life.

So so much of this.  Drone, drone, drone, slow practice, slow practice, slow practice.

A new addition to the fridge—a postcard from Carrie in Norway.  Welcome back Carrie!

I’m dropping the marathon.  I’m only running the half.  I had too much going on, and I had to make some choices.  I chose the audition and work.  Everything else had to go.  I’ll start catching up next Tuesday.  Considering that I haven’t actually run since my race in January…yeah.

This was me texting my sister Leslie that I was dropping down to the half in April.  I’m the one in blue.

And with that…
