Who wants chowder?

I’m sort of on Spring Break—the school where I teach is on Spring Break so that means I have three days off this week! You’d think I’d be catching up on all kinds of stuff, but mainly so far I’ve watched a lot of TV, slept a bunch and hung out with friends.

Seafood Chowder and Crab Cakes from Robust Wine Bar last night (not sure why that one picture is sideways…)

Even the cat is bored by this blog post

You know how bloggers like to take pictures of their outfits? I’ve started doing this…also I was inspired by a friend…

It’s stupid and I love it. I’d tell you where I bought my clothes but we all know it’s just Target…I’m SUCH a fashionista!

So how has your weekend been so far?

Sunday Night thoughts (mainly about cats)

Today was the first day I wasn’t filled with time and schedule panic.  I slept in and I have already practiced several hours, along with having watched last week’s two hour Downton Abbey and spending plenty of time chatting with my friends on twitter.  (I lead a full, rich life.)  And here I am, blogging.  CRAZY.

I’m starting to feel like this guy.  Just a fat blob, resting on the couch.  It’s cool though.  She’s pretty freaking adorable, so if I’m half that cute, I’m still okay, I think.

(checking out the lovely flower arrangement Chris brought home)

Oh, and Happy (belated) Valentine’s Day to everybody.  We wanted to go out to eat (I know, surprise, us, going out to eat, that’s CRAZY) but we wanted to go somewhere new, so we went to Harvest.  Valentine’s Day is never the best night to go out to dinner, because it’s so ROMANTIC and the service was slow and the menu was a required prix fix menu, but the food was pretty good.  Chris was sad because they ran out of the dessert he wanted (goat cheesecake) but overall we enjoyed our meal.  We’ll probably go back and try the regular menu sometime, so that’s a good recommendation.

I left my blogging hat at home and didn’t take any food pictures, but I believe Chris had the short ribs and I had something called the “duck reuben” which was really tasty.  Everybody told us to try the bread pudding, that it was to die for, and it was very good, though…I don’t know that it was my favorite.  It was weird because it was obviously made with the same bread that they had served on the table so it felt like I had already had it.  Though the caramel sauce was delicious.

(my true valentine)

Even though generally we will sit in the same house for hours without talking, I’m always pretty proud of our ability to carry on a good conversation in public 😉  Is that weird?  When we were in Paris, we ate (very early) at a restaurant with only one other couple there at the time, and they weren’t talking.  It was totally weird!  We felt STRANGE having a conversation when they were just sitting there all disgruntled and awkward.  To be fair, lots of people were talking at Harvest and there were lots of awkwardly dressed couples which made for excellent people watching.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  This week is going to be stress city, but I feel fantastic.  No matter what happens on Tuesday in the audition, I know that I sound really good, that I can play the HECK out of my excerpts, and as long as I don’t freak out, I should have a good audition.  The results are irrelevant and out of my hands, but I can control how well I play and how I feel, and that’s my main goal.  I’ve done the prep (and a bit more left to do, but I KNOW everything really well) and all that’s left is to perform.  I’m ready to get back to real life as well, but I’m trying not to think like that.

Oh, and Friday night at 7 pm I’m performing with Chamber Project St Louis at the St Louis Art Museum.  Come out and see me play!

Oh, and my sister Leslie and her husband got a new kitten.  I’m totally jealous and trying to lobby Chris to let me get a new kitten (or dozen).  So far he is pretty convinced that it’s not the greatest idea at this time, but I bet I can wear him down.

Good eats in Phoenix

Well, since this is a restaurant review blog (oh, what?) I should tell you guys where I ate and drank while on my trip to Phoenix last week.

I’ll even start with the St Louis Airport.

IMG_4242

I went to the Brewmaster’s Tap Room which is in the Southwest Terminal of Lambert St Louis.  I appreciate that they have actual beers on the menu in addition to Budweiser and Bud Light.  They were out of the 5 day, so I had the Schlafly Pale Ale.

IMG_4245 IMG_4252

It’s important to stick your nose in the glass to really absorb the flavors.

Okay, so then I was in Phoenix for dinner.  Leslie, Peter (her husband) and I went to the Windsor for dinner and drinks and general merriment.  It was good.  I had the chicken salad sandwich with roasted vegetables on the side.

IMG_4267

IMG_4271

I love roasted cauliflower.  I don’t know why it is so good.

IMG_4273

These were not both mine.

Lunch the next day was at La Condesa, where I’d been before.  It’s a little hole in the wall “Taco Shop” with a really sweet salsa bar.  I got a burrito.

IMG_4299

El Pastor Burro.  It was delicious.

Dinner I went with Sarah to a sushi place called Stingray Sushi.  It was at the Biltmore Fashion Park, but I think it’s a chain.

Lunch the next day was at Gallo Blanco.  This is the restaurant attached to the Clarendon Hotel, where Leslie and Peter held their wedding reception.

IMG_4348

A really good picture of the steak burrito I had.

For dinner I went with Sarah to Pita Jungle which is quite near where Leslie and Peter live.  I had the chicken shawarma pita.

IMG_4377 IMG_4379

I also made fun of Sarah for being on her phone a lot.  I think she was “checking us in” so I figured I’d photograph her and instagram it.  That sounds about right, doesn’t it?

IMG_4386

The next day was race day.  After the race we got Pita Jungle again!

IMG_4419

(Falafel wrap, SOOOO delicious!)

Dinner was at Barrio Cafe.

IMG_4430 IMG_4432

Guacamole—they make this to your specifications right by the table.  We had it with everything, and it was awesome!

IMG_4433

Seafood Enchiladas.  I took half of this home because I ate some much of the guacamole.  Squash dipped in cream sauce is a really delicious thing though.

Next day: Lunch at the Oink Cafe.

IMG_4447

How can you not love a place with the tagline:  Breakfast. Lunch. Bacon.??

IMG_4451

Bacon Eggs Benedict.  I was having intense salt cravings so I asked to substitute hash browns for the fruit…that’s probably part of why my pants are tight.  Among other reasons.  Really, which I’m all listing here.  We ate out a ridiculous amount!

Dinner:  The Main Ingredient.

IMG_4461

I don’t know what dressing they use on their side salad, but it’s amazing.  I’ve eaten here before too and it’s great.  I also like how when you get a side salad with your sandwich they don’t give you a measly portion, it’s a really huge one.  Oh my god, I’m waxing poetic about the size of a side salad, aren’t I?

And, last but not least:  naturally we had to hit up Taco Bell at least once…

IMG_4473

I cannot think of anything more disgusting than that, yet I am tempted.  Sadly, or fortunately, I don’t think we have breakfast at Taco Bell here.

IMG_4477

I think that was enough hot sauce for two girls to eat four items from Taco Bell.

Have you been to Phoenix?  Are any of these places your favorites?

Miscellaneous Mondays

I’m starting a new thing (ha, we’ll see how long this lasts) where on Mondays I try to catch up on random stuff I want to tell you plus remind you of any awesome things that happened over the weekend, if you are just a weekday reader.  Today I am giving you some discounts (Simply Snackin’ and Pretty Muddy Race Series), giving you a short book review, and telling you about what I was up to.  You can always bookmark this post and come back later if you are too busy today to deal with all of this information.

1. Simply Snackin’

I was recently sent some chicken and beef meat snacks to try out and tell you guys about.

simplysnackin

Each serving is 60 calories and obviously very high in protein.  The company is family owned (if that appeals to you!), and honestly, these snacks are delicious.  I’ve tried a few of them and I really like them.  They aren’t too dry like some jerky is—they are juicy and tasty, and a nice afternoon snack.

Through January, you can go to simplysnackin.com and enter SSjan2013 for 10% off the purchase price.  Again, even though I was given this product for free, I would buy it again for 10% off because it is tasty and I love high protein, portable snacks.

2. Book Review:

Champagne: The Farewell by Janet Hubbard

The main character in Champagne is a female detective named Max.  Max is in France attending a friend’s wedding when her friend’s aunt is murdered.  Though the French police are on the case as well, Max feels compelled to help, even while being involved romantically with one of the French detectives.  She tries to use her position as a friend of the family to get the other family members to confide in her, while trying not to get too romantically involved with the detective, Oliver.

I loved the detail in Ms. Hubbard’s writing and I enjoyed being transported to the French countryside. Sometimes the book felt a bit tedious and the author really wanted to emphasize how French things were, but I generally enjoyed the read and felt that the mystery unraveled in a natural way, without any ridiculous plot twists.  The ending surprised me but it all made sense, so that was a plus in my book!

Anyway, go to that link above to check out the book (it’s an Amazon affiliate link, so if you buy it I get a tiny percentage of the sales and that can help support this blog and keep me taking cat pictures and pictures of myself.)

I was provided a review copy free of charge but my opinions are my own.

3. Pretty Muddy Discount code.

Are you familiar with the Pretty Muddy races?  I haven’t done a mud run before, but maybe I will someday.  This is a mud run that is all women.  My friend Rose has a great blog post with mud run tricks and tips, and my friend Adam (The Boring Runner) recently wrote a post querying whether “all women’s races” were fair.  Both are worth the read.

They are offering a ONE TIME $20 discount. The code is GIRLTIME.

This special expires at the end of January…after that the price will never be this low again—no groupon or living social deals like you might have seen in the past.  Supposedly there is going to be one in St Louis in September but it’s not on the website yet…

4.  My life

I took a bunch of food pictures today, so I thought I’d share with you what I ate today in case you were curious. (Humor me because I realized I photographed basically everything I ate today, so this is possible.  Why, I don’t know.  Maybe I was bored, or I was playing around online with my friend Sarah and we realized if you instagram something and tag it with #crossfit you automatically get a ton of likes, or I’m obsessed with photographing my food because I’m becoming a caricature of a real human, or I get amused taking food pictures ever since a friend made a joke about turning food into poo…not like that joke has only happened once as some days I feel like my life is one big poop joke…but I digress.)

Breakfast:  I started with this banana…

image_3

I had a lot of trouble cutting it, but I managed.  (There is a banana slicer on amazon, please read the reviews if you haven’t.)

Oatmeal with banana, protein powder, and a little peanut butter for flavor.

Lunch was leftover Salmon Frazer from Friday night, with rice and beans and spinach on the side.  Yummy!

Oh, then we went to see the Hobbit in 3D with some friends and I had some popcorn.  I didn’t photograph that, but I ate several handfuls and it was tasty.  The Hobbit was AWESOME in 3D.  On the list of things I have said in the past that are incorrect:  “I don’t see why anybody needs a camera on their phone” and “I don’t see why movies need to be in 3D.”  I was wrong on both counts.

After the movie we decided to grab dinner nearby and went to Granite City Brewery.  None of us had been there before so we were eager to check it out.

Chris started with the beer sampler.  I actually just had one beer (the IPA) but the sampler was much more fun to photograph.

image_1

He and I are both huge IPA fans, and he ordered the IPA after sampling a bunch.

I had the Korean Tacos for dinner.  They had pork and a “korean” sauce on them.  Very tasty.  Not pictured: side salad.

tacos

I didn’t eat the cucumber salad because I don’t care for cucumbers.

Our friends had brought us a small “anniversary”gift and we had the bag on the table.  The waitress asked if I was my birthday, and I said no, but our anniversary was last week.  She got excited and we were like, oh no, no, that’s not why we are out.  But then I remembered Chris JUST had a birthday and I mentioned that (yes, I’m an excellent wife) so she offered us a free dessert.  My rule is: never turn down free dessert.

It was a really big cookie that had just been baked.  It had chocolate chips, almonds, and heath bar bits in it.  The four of us managed to polish this off pretty quickly.

Spinach Artichoke Dip

Happy New Year, dear readers!  I thought I’d kick off 2013 by sharing the recipe I made last night for a party I attended.  I’m waiting to get a few more pictures from the party before I tell you all about it.  So I’ll just talk about food instead!

Who doesn’t love a good spinach artichoke dip?  I recently decided it was time for me to make my own for an earlier party, and it was so delicious that Chris requested I make it again for New Year’s.  I basically followed Alton Brown’s recipe, but I made a few minor changes for my convenience and it turned out great!  (It may not be the prettiest food, but it IS delicious.  And totally healthy, as spinach is a very healthy vegetable.  I’m sure my trainer would give this recipe the A-OK.)

spinachartichokedip

Ingredients

  • 1 small package (10 oz) thawed, chopped frozen spinach, thawed
  • 1 can artichoke hearts, drained
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (I used fresh garlic instead)

Directions

In a large saucepan, cook the spinach until completely heated.  (I didn’t add water, nor did I drain afterwards, but you certainly could.) Add the artichoke hearts and the cream cheese.  Stir until cream cheese is melted.  Add the rest of the ingredients and mix thoroughly.  (I doubled the recipe for the party and it was all gone.)

Gingerbread Cake

I’m not an amazing cook or an amazing baker.  I have my skills—I’m really good at cookies, because you get so many chances to get it right, and I’m a patient person.  I have amazing pie recipes and genetic tendencies towards making pie (not crusts, mind you, I’m talking about the filling.)  Cake on the other hand…not really my strong point.  Granted I haven’t had a whole lot of practice, which arguably is the biggest problem, but still.

A few weeks ago I found this recipe for Gingerbread Cake which looked really good and “Christmas-y”, and I emailed it to my friend Laura.  She responded that I should absolutely make it for Christmas.  Okay, except I’ve never had a huge amount of success with the Smitten Kitchen’s recipes.  That doesn’t mean I can’t try again, right?  To be fair, my only non-success was the Raspberry Buttermilk Cake I tried and the whole thing fell apart as I flipped the pan, and the second time I made it it was great.  But that was a scarring experience.  (I’m aware that all cooks and bakers have disasters.  I just prefer not to.  Remember what I said the other day, failed perfectionist.)

(Raspberry Buttermilk Cake, back in the day.  I love that I can reference my life via a search box on my blog.)

The next issue was that I needed a bundt pan and didn’t have one.  This is an easily remedied solution in the US, but even easier than buying one is borrowing one from Laura.  Later she asked to borrow my apple peeler/corer (we have this awesome contraption) and a springform pan for a recipe she was making so it was perfect (or frankly, the opposite of perfect, because we were making absolutely the wrong recipes.)

photo

(This is how the cake starts.  Beer and Molasses. )

Did I mention grocery shopping yesterday?  I have three church services to play today so I wanted to get my grocery shopping done yesterday.  I’ve been tasked with bringing corn pudding and a green vegetable to Christmas as well as the cake.  We are also planning a cooked breakfast in the morning with pancakes, sausage, hash browns, and coffee cake (basically all the stuff we don’t allow ourselves to eat ordinarily, isn’t that what the holidays are for? Don’t ask me about what has happened to the cookie party cookies or how my weight loss plans are doing, this too shall pass and at least we are keeping up our running and working out—also please ignore my switching between we and I, because half the time I’m referring to Chris and the other half it’s the royal We.)

image

(I was worried because it was so liquidy compared to other, non-cake recipes, but it turned out good.  Took at least 15 minutes longer than the recipe said, which always freaks me out.)

Anyway, the grocery store was pretty busy, and then I couldn’t find the cardamom I needed.  They were all out.  I did a google search and determined it could be substituted with something else, and twitter told me the same (well, some on twitter said otherwise but I figured I’d go with the people who agreed with me)—then Laura said she had cardamom seeds and could grind some for me…well, it turned out the recipe said “a pinch of cardamom” so I figured, this is not even worth it.  And I believe I was correct, because the cake tastes great.  I know this because when I went to flip the bundt pan plenty of it stuck in the pan.  So the cake will taste wonderful though it is perhaps NOT the most attractive baked good.

image_1

But I’ll put some powdered sugar on top, and like I said, it’ll taste great.  I’m not trying again.  I have other stuff to make.

Here’s the link to the recipe.
