It’s been…one year…

Happy Anniversary to my husband Chris!

(No, I’m not wearing my bridesmaids dress.  Yes, I did buy it because it sort of looked like my bridesmaids dress. It’s a short version and I got it for approximately $25 at Marshall’s and I love it! Yes, I own things that aren’t purple but I rarely wear them.)

Here’s to many more!

Looks about the same, right?  The holes are where there were little wooden “support beams” for the cake topper.

Tasted great too!  I wrapped it in plastic wrap and then aluminum foil, one year later, tastes fantastic!  We actually refroze it after each having a piece…I don’t know how many more times we can do that though.

Shameless “our wedding” plug: If you are new to the blog and you love weddings, be sure to visit my wedding tab!  We planned our wedding mostly by ourselves and had it in St Louis (at Moulin Events, and here’s a link to my post with all our vendors), so if you are getting married in St Louis and have any questions, I’d be happy to answer them (honestly I love talking about weddings, so feel free to talk to me no matter).  A good friend of mine recently got engaged and I was getting all excited talking to her about it, and she said, You really want to plan another wedding, don’t you!  I said, well, maybe…maybe I should be a wedding planner!  But seriously, no, it’s entirely too stressful (I do play violin for weddings, so I’m in the industry), but I had so much fun planning it (in retrospect, I think we had an okay time and fought a bunch) and frankly, I love attending weddings too.  I’m still waiting for my sister’s professional photographs and hope to do a recap of her wedding and vendors when that time comes.

Cats and Chinese food

Lots of bloggers like to do year-end recaps.  2012 has been a pretty eventful year for me, and I could probably write a really long post about it and include tons of wedding pictures.  But maybe I’ve already written about myself enough?  Perhaps I’ll be inspired.

But today I just want to share yesterday with you.  I was active on social media (this is a shocker) and took a bunch of pictures, and you all know I enjoy re-sharing my pictures.  (And I like doing journal-type entries the best, honestly.  I don’t know if you find them interesting, but I enjoy writing them.)

The day started with a blogger meet up.  I belong to a facebook group made up of bloggers from the St Louis area.  I hadn’t made the past few meetings as they were on Friday nights and I work late and then usually am too tired to meet new people afterwards.  This one was on a Saturday morning and involved coffee, so I was excited.  It was kind of a meet up fail though, because it was just me and Lindsay.

I was going to the gym afterwards, and figured that gym clothes, ponytail, and no makeup were totally appropriate for a blogger meet up.

We had a great time chatting and drinking coffee at Deer Creek Coffee in Clayton.  We discussed everything from the tax implications of blogging to whether or not our husbands like to eat leftovers.  I was inspired by Lindsay’s energy and excitement about blogging and life in general!

Maybe my next blogger meet up will include more people?

Then it was time to hit the gym.  I thought I felt fine but after I started working out I didn’t really.  Mike had originally planned a circuit of 1 minute sprint, front squats, and kettlebell swings (we squeezed in an extra workout because of my trip next week) but I almost passed out after the second sprint so he revised the workout.  (He actually asked if I wanted to go home and we could reschedule but I felt like I should soldier through.)  Oops.  I made it through the workout though, and I’m sure felt better for it!  That is, it was probably a huge waste and I should have taken him up on his “rescheduling” offer but I felt like a loser.  In retrospect I think he really wanted to go home as well since I was his last client, and he was drinking water just as fast as I was.

Nonetheless.  Shower and then work time.  Rarely is there a Saturday I don’t play a wedding and yesterday was no exception.

Leslie should appreciate my no ears hairstyle for the day.

After my gig, Chris and I decided to go out for Chinese food.  Our favorite place to go in St Louis is Wei Hong Bakery and Restaurant.  We discovered this place a few years ago and love it.  It’s very casual and fairly inexpensive and always delicious.  They say it’s pretty authentic too, but I have never been to China so I can’t vouch for that.  Maybe I should take my brother there next time he’s in town!

I had hot and sour soup to start.

And then a seafood tofu casserole.  They have this tofu that is called “egg tofu” on the menu—I suppose it has eggs in it (sorry Carrie and other vegans) but it is AMAZING.  It has the consistency of a custard or flan, and I could probably eat it for every meal.

Naturally our meal ended with a fortune cookie.

Me, impatient?  Never!

Anyway, the last thing we were doing was meeting some friends who recently got engaged (!!) at Sasha’s.  But first I was lying on the couch watching TV and…

How could I go anywhere with this guy on my lap?

I decided to destroy her evening by flipping her over for a picture…

I wanted to get her belly in the picture, but my arms just aren’t that long!  I probably should have gotten Chris to take the picture but I didn’t think ahead.

This picture is an example of how photography is all about angles.  She doesn’t look fat at all, does she?

And yet…

Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Who would have thought, back when I was five years old learning Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, that one day I would be a ROCKSTAR?

image

Okay, I’m exaggerating…a little.  But! Yesterday I played at the Scottrade Center with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.  This is my third time playing with the group—it’s a touring show and they always hire some local musicians to fill out the string section in each city.  There’s one violinist (her name is Asha, for the “West” Tour—I think there’s another tour with another violinist) who plays electric violin, dances, and leads the orchestra.  To fill out the string section there’s another first violin (me!), two second violins, two violas, and two cellos, and we sit onstage the whole time and play through a thick book of music with very little rehearsal!  No dancing for us, don’t worry.

photo

The biggest stress the first show was when to turn on the stand lights.  I was in charge of the stand lights for the whole group and had a little button on the floor.  I had to turn them off at the end of each song and then on again shortly before the new song started.  Sure, that sounds pretty easy, except for it was dark in between so I couldn’t see anything, like the set list, and since we didn’t really rehearse I didn’t KNOW when the new song was about to start.  I only made one real mistake when I forgot there was a song we weren’t on and turned them on early.  I am assuming no one in the audience noticed, what with all the lights and fire and dancing and singing.  The second show was easier as I knew what to expect.

tso

Can you find me in the picture?  I’m actually in all the rest of these pictures…

It was an exhausting show BUT it was really fun.  We classical musicians don’t usually get quite so many people cheering for us!  (I did play with Josh Groban once—that was interesting–the audience full of middle-aged women screaming and throwing underwear on stage.  I kid.  Sort of.  No, I really did play with Josh Groban, and I think maybe two or three times at huge venues in Columbus and Pittsburgh.)TSO2

(I totally stole these pictures from a friend’s facebook page.  I hope he doesn’t mind—his wife took the photos and I’m thrilled!)

TSO3

That’s the fun bit of being a freelancer—every day is a different job so you never get bored and you never know what to expect.  Or at least that’s the fun part for me!  (Let’s ignore the 5 days of teaching the same people at the same times and pretend I freelance more 😉 )

Have you ever been to a Trans-Siberian Orchestra Show before?  Did you find me in the pictures?  Do you think I’m way cooler now than you did before or have I ruined everything by asking that question?

Two good books about family and loss (perfect for the Holiday season)

Happy Christmas Eve Eve!

Here’s a double book review and giveaway!  These two books had the common theme of family and loss so I think they fit well together.  And I find the holidays to be a time that I always think about my family, and those who are no longer with us…is that just me?  I always get so introspective and a little depressed

Celia’s Journey
by Heather Muzik

Celia’s Journey is the story of a family who loses a child in a tragic accident and how their lives continue from that point on.  I’m not going to lie, I cried more reading this book than I had from a book in a really long time (I’m thinking the last Harry Potter book…).

The Strane family (Lindsay, Jerry, Adam, and Max) have a wonderful and easy life until a tragic accident takes one of the boys.  Everything changes as the family members struggle with their grief and pain, and try to continue with life and put the pieces back together.  The book is a difficult read because of the subject matter, but it’s a really good read.  I highly recommend it.

Out and Back
by Diane Strong

Out and Back is the story of another family, but this from the point of the view of a daughter who loses her mom to cancer and how she copes with her life afterwards.  Amber is a mom and a runner (a synopsis I found online referred to her as a “obsessive running/fitness junkie”—I prefer “runner”) who has, as most of us do, a challenging relationship with her mother and struggles to create a “perfect” life for herself and her family.  (I definitely related to Amber in this book.)  The book jumps back and forth from earlier in her life to the present day to tell the story of her life and how she copes with her loss and other family problems.

Like I said, I enjoyed both these books.  Celia’s Journey is a harder read, but REALLY good.  Out and Back was more relatable for me since I’m a runner (and perfectionist too…or at least a failed perfectionist.)  I recommend them both.

More stuff: Heather Muzik wanted me to tell you about a promotion for some of her other books that starts tomorrow (Christmas Eve!)—these books will be free on kindle on December 24, 25, and 26 as part of a promotion. She said the “2 Till” books are light and fun, and the other book is dark and twisted.  I know I’ll be taking advantage of the promotion!

You can find some other books by Diane Strong here.

All her books have a running theme.  Diane is a runner, triathlete, and also participates in adventure races.  Crazy, right?

Another of her books:

Giveaway time!  GIVEAWAY CLOSED:  WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED BY EMAIL! Okay, for the first book, “Celia’s Journey,” I am giving away a kindle or e-reader copy of the book OR a real paperback copy (mailed to US residents only).  For the second book, “Out and Back” I am giving away three kindle copies of the book.

Leave a comment below to win and let me know if you have a kindle or e-reader (you can read on your computer too and a variety of other ways).

I’ll choose the first winner randomly, and then choose three more winners who are up for the kindle copies (somewhat randomly, but funny, touching, or properly spelled comments would have a higher chance of winning!)  Winners will be notified by email.  This giveaway runs until 10 pm CST Sunday, December 30.

As thrilled as I am to be on vacation from teaching for over two weeks, that doesn’t mean I don’t love my students.  I do.

Last night I said something like “Thank goodness I don’t have to see any children for over two weeks!”  My friend Laura looked a little insulted and said she would do her best to keep Benjamin out of my way on Christmas.  Mothers get so sensitive about these things.  I may teach him to play the violin on Christmas Day, just to spite her (he’s 8 months old, so it would be a stretch, but he’s a smartie, and I’m a really good teacher so it could work.)

This was a gift from my student who wore the horse head mask to his lesson one day.

And this from his mother!  The whole family is amazing and really gets me.

Then my friend Sarah sent me this picture.  Even better, she let me know that she followed the truck around the Tempe Marketplace for at least five minutes, waited for it to park, and then got out of her car to take that picture for me.

Oh, and a note to recently married people:  keep your wedding registry up to date.  I found out my Mom sent us something from it and I hadn’t updated our address…since I didn’t think we’d be getting anything else.  Oops!  Thanks anyway, Mom!

Too Many Friends

Does anyone else have this problem?  It’s a wonderful problem to have, but still a problem.  You feel like you’re too busy with work and other stuff (you know, working out, taking pictures of your cat) to meet up with your friends, and when you do, you have a great time, and you say, gosh, we should do this more often! and then weeks go by again.

(FYI: I’m going to intersperse random photos I’ve saved to share with you into my blog post today.  I’m feeling super random, so you’ll have to spare me and you know, get over it.)journey

I’ve been overwhelmed this week.  It’s the last week of teaching before “vacation” (which officially isn’t until about the 29th for me as next week is chock-full of gigs) and that’s fine, but then I have been packing all kinds of extra stuff in and I don’t even know where the week went!

catpiano

Let’s see, I’ve been teaching, practicing, figuring out last minute Christmas presents, trying to hang out with friends who are going out of town, figuring out our anniversary trip (Chicago! Need more restaurants suggestions and don’t say “The Girl and the Goat” because it is booked up), working out, acting as virtual virtual coach for Rose, baking, eating, and reading a bunch.  Basically nothing really important and just procrastinating a lot–I’m only “busy” in that normally I don’t do anything 3 pm and this week has been different 😉

(You can read Rose’s blog post on my virtual virtual coaching of her.  Nutshell:  she owes me $1.99.  Longer story:  we’re failing pretty hard at her training plan and we keep rationalizing it.  I blame her for accepting running advice from me.)

Oh, and this morning I played assistant to Sarah Crowder for a video shoot.  It was great fun and I will share the video with you when it comes out!

Oh wait, that picture is related…shoot.

I just found this on facebook.  I’m very delighted by it.
