Birthdays

My family has a plethora of summer birthdays. It starts with my dad’s in May, then mine in June, then my brother’s in July quickly followed by my sister Leslie’s, which was yesterday. I was absolutely going to write a blog post wishing her a happy birthday yesterday but I got caught up in other more important things. So today is a blog post wishing her a happy (belated) birthday.

Us, looking all pretty and whatnot.

Leslie recently got a new phone that had the ability to use FaceTime (video chatting over the phone). We were talking on the phone and thought, let’s try it out. This naturally led to her pointing her phone at her cats and me pointing it at mine. Anyone spying on our conversation might have thought that the cats were having a little chat. (Anyone who knows cats would have known that the cats had no idea what was going on, as usual, and were simply busy grooming themselves, and for her cats, each other.)

(You’re saying, wow, GREAT STORY HANNAH. Yes, well, that’s how I roll.)

(One of my friends named Sarah went to New Orleans and brought this voodoo runner guy back for me. I love it!! There’s a bell on the top of his head so that everyone can hear him running.)

I could go on more about how adorable her cats are, but I suppose I MIGHT already talk about cats too much here.

Speaking of…I’ve decided to put the cat on a diet. My friend Karen’s cat successfully lost quite a lot of weight (I want to say 5 to 8 pounds but I’m just guessing) and she looks and acts really great. I figured the fatness could probably stand to lose a couple of pounds, so, like any responsible cat owner, I did some internet research on caloric needs and how many calories are in her food and that kind of thing, and came up with a plan for her feeding, that isn’t TOO much of a cutback, but just a little.  I’m hoping that she will in time lose a few pounds and have a bit svelter figure. I also don’t really want her to be THIN but simply, less overweight. Is that wrong?? I think she’d look great with just a little bit of extra tummy, but less than she has now. I guess we’ll see how it goes. So far I am standing strong and I believe that she is doing okay.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could diet the same way? I want somebody to figure out my caloric needs and set out my food a couple times a day, and that’s it—when I’m done eating it, I’m done, and if I whine too much, just pat me on the head and under the chin a lot. Of course this is assuming that I’d be trapped in a small house with no means of escape and no ability to get any food for myself, and on occasion I would be able to eat a few delicious bugs.

I know. You’re saying, what are you even talking about Hannah? But people said, hey, just blog. It doesn’t have to be ABOUT anything, so that’s what I’m doing. I’m just writing. It’s a blog about nothing?

Have you ever put your cat on a diet? Suggestions? Moral support?

And again, happy belated birthday to Leslie!

Lots of Good Things

When we were younger, we’d often bug my mom as to what she was making for dinner. Sometimes this would be a leftover meal, and she’d tell us “lots of good things.” This was not always the truth…(sorry Mom!)

Anyway.

Cats, Chicago, whatnot.

Chicago: visited my friend Karen over the weekend. She plays with the Grant Park Orchestra during the summer.

The cat made it challenging to pack for my trip.

Where the orchestra performs (at Millennium Park.) Such a cool pavilion.

IMG_6917

Mainly when you take pictures of the Bean, you are just taking pictures of people taking pictures. I wonder if back before cameras people simply looked at things and didn’t always pose. What does this say for us as a society? Have we evolved, or are we no longer enjoying things as they are, but simply as photo ops? As a blogger who likes to take pictures, I realize I’m part of the problem.

I am in this picture.

Ice cream selfie! It was a very hot day.

Another view of the Pavilion. It was a concert which included Saint-Saens’s Organ Symphony. Which I decided would be better with cannons.

IMG_6931

This happened. Bacon wrapped chorizo stuffed dates from Avec. My favorite. La raison d’être.

IMG_6949

And this happened. Didn’t hurt as much as I thought it would. Well, not really. That part up the middle made me kind of wish I were dead.

And now I’m home with this fine creature. Who I have officially put on a diet. I know. It’s time.

Catuesday

I can’t believe it’s finally Catuesday again, can you??

On the list of things we will not be addressing on my blog today: why I haven’t been blogging, working out properly, or eating my morning oatmeal.

My youngest sister made a joke the other day that even though I’m not blogging as much lately, at least I am still going out to eat.

We aren’t going to address that either. I have some fun restaurants to share with you, but NO.

Today is all cats. The following pictures will be presented without commercial interruption or comment. You’ll recognize the fatness, and the others are my sister Leslie’s Albergo (white) and Catalunya (black).

Enjoy your Catuesday! Hope you are able to stay cool in this heat (or lucky you, if it isn’t super hot in your area!)

It’s Monday so I’ll post some pictures of My Cat

IMG_6577

The cover for my new violin case is slightly padded and therefore, perfect for kitties.

IMG_6575

The proper way to pet a cat: pet under her chin, scratch her ears and the top of her head, and THAT’S IT DO NOT START SQUEEZING HER TUMMY NO MATTER HOW TEMPTING THIS IS BECAUSE THEN SHE WILL RUN AWAY.

IMG_6579

Once she retreats to a safe distance she can stare at you while resting comfortably on your new purple case cover.

Catuesday

Catuesday is the new Caturday, right?

IMG_6273

It’s her favorite cat nip toy. It was a Christmas Present, I believe.

IMG_6276

Though the fatness doesn’t actually celebrate Christmas, she is still happy to have toys other than fake stuffed sardines and stolen ponytail holders.

IMG_6278

I challenge you to look at these pictures and not have the urge to squeeze her around the middle.

IMG_6252

Over the weekend I got some flowers at our studio recital. Here she is trying to eat one.

She did eat a leaf. Am I a bad pet owner for taking this picture rather than moving her? (Don’t answer). This happened on Saturday night though, and she’s absolutely fine, so I think we’re okay. Probably a little salad won’t hurt her.

My cat is stalking me and other random happenings in my life

Lately the cat has taken to waiting for us at the top of the stairs.

I HAD to stop and pet her for awhile. Then I tried to do that thing you can do to babies—you put your lips on their stomach and “buzz” and they laugh and laugh, and maybe pee themselves a little bit. Well, (and I already knew this) if you do this to a cat the cat just stares and you and then you realize that you mouth is full of cat hair. Oops.

And I knew that already, but I think the whole lips on belly thing must be instinctual and I was powerless to resist my own urges. I’ll probably be coughing up a hair ball tomorrow.

Other random thoughts and happening:

1. I was quite sad today because one of my students was observing one of the other teachers after his lesson. This is because my school is closing and I live farther from the school that they are willing to drive, and it was totally out in the open but I still felt sad. I will miss quite a few of my students. I still occasionally miss some of my students from Cleveland, and even from Charlotte, and wonder how they are doing. I’m terrible at keeping in touch for that sort of thing, and honestly I figure people have moved on and don’t owe me anything. But still.

2. Yesterday another student’s dad asked if they could come every other week for twice as long because the student really loves lessons with me but he is worried driving so much each week would be difficult. I told him we could talk. (Ordinarily I require weekly lessons as too many bad habits can happen, but I make exceptions.) That made me feel really warm and fuzzy 🙂 I love hearing that kids enjoy their violin lessons, because if nothing else, I want violin and music to be a positive experience in their lives.

3. I got asked to play my first Wagner opera! It’s with Union Avenue Opera here in August, and it’s Die Walkure. I’m pretty pumped.

4. And, really fun news: Chris has been invited to play viola with the Colorado Music Festival this summer, and I will be spending a good bit of time with him in Boulder. We had a great time on vacation there last year so I am eager to go back. I might be able to substitute with the group as well (I was too late to apply for a position myself, but I suppose somebody has to stay home with the cat?)

5. TV: We recently started watching “The Americans.” It’s really good! I love a good old-fashioned Russian spy drama and I love shows with strong female leads. I’m glad to see that it’s been renewed for a second season too. I recommend you watch!
